"Test of the Soul"--just the title, without further clues--has been afflicting Jun with a certain apprehension since his arrival in Tsuma. Any time people around him start going on and on and on about souls and spirits and karma (which is a lot of the time, back home), Jun tends to lose focus. Numinous is just another word for vague, and he prefers to devote his energy to things that are concrete and solvable.

And then the fifth morning arrives, and the Test of the Soul turns out to be... just tea and conversation? Jun is almost too relieved. His family has produced many capable diplomats and courtiers. He's totally ready for this.

"Doji-sama, this tea is truly remarkable. Could it be the Apricot Blossom Fragrance cultivar, from the Wall Above the Ocean province? I once read of it, but it's quite impossible to find it up north, no matter how I searched." Encouraged by Doji Shingo's approving confirmation of his guess, Jun continues to wax enthusiastic. "I thought it had to be! I'm sure you would already know this, sir, but the distinctive aroma of this tea was the critical clue in the celebrated serial murder case at the Winter Court of 1098. What other tea could satisfy the great epicures of that age and perfectly hide the smell of bitter almond extract?" Jun smiles happily as he savors another sip. "It really is as good as they say. What an honor!"

Belatedly sensing something amiss in the whitening of his conversation partner's lips and the slight adjustment of his posture, Jun realizes he's gone wrong somewhere. Damn! How could he have been so foolish as to court-splain the 1098 Poison Flower Scandal to a Crane of Shingo's generation? Obviously, the Crane courtier must be insulted that Jun would assume he, Doji Shingo, didn't already know every deliciously gruesome detail. Yes, surely that must be it. No other possible explanation.

Jun tamps down his curiosity (even though he's now burning to ask Were you there, sir?!? Did you see the murderer's famous earthenware teapot?) and lets Shingo lead the remainder of the conversation, following the older man's cues into much more boring but evidently safer topics, like the autumn leaf season in Kyuden Kitsuki.

And then there is the last challenge... a piece of art to 'represent yourself'? Well, that's right back to the vague and mystical again. Jun tries to recall what he's read about artists and their creative processes. Right, wasn't it Hantei IX who had really loved painting? So much he'd relocated the Emerald Magistrates' compound to make room for the Imperial Painting Academy? Which was insane, but anyway, in fairness to the old Emperor, he had trained a lot of great painters. Jun can still remember catching a glimpse of one of those paintings, on a rare visit to the private residence inside Kyuden Kitsuki. "The Scent of Wildflowers," it was titled, but the artist hadn't painted any flowers--only a pair of butterflies fluttering around the hooves of a strolling horse. And yet you somehow knew the horse had just been galloping through a field of wildflowers, and its hooves were covered in flower perfume--the dance of the painted butterflies told the whole story. Now that was good art.

Unfortunately, however poetic the source of Jun's inspiration might be, his childish painting of two dancing bluebottles showing the way to a patch of grass where the body of a murder victim was hidden... did not win the judges' approval. Too bad. Brilliant idea but poor execution, I suppose.

Jingyi had very little experience with tea in a formal setting. Coffee around a campfire was far more welcome. She tried to emulate the example given, but she was only passable when she approached the conversation in her own way.

My name is Doji Nanako. I hope we have a pleasant conversation today, though I will not really say what it is I mean to say in my soul. I hope you forgive me - this is because I'm not really an exemplar of my family. I'm sure I have a curse.

I'm the seventh daughter of a seventh daughter. Most of my older siblings are dead or crippled. I'm still healthy - for now.

Bad luck follows me wherever I go, so I don't have too many friends at the Academy. I had friends once, but they got sick. Or hurt. Or...well...I don't have many friends now. Even those who don't hear about me firsthand, they don't want to talk to the weird girl who talks to animals and obsesses with fortune talismans and superstitions.

I'm not going to tell you any of this when we're having tea, though. That wouldn't be polite. That wouldn't be graceful. That wouldn't be what a Crane maiden would do. We'll talk about harmless things: the weather, the tea, exchange compliments on our outfits. But I wouldn't ruin the moment with sharing the truth about myself; it would just sour the taste of the tea and the tea is too excellent for that.

Besides, we should come to know one another better before such talk. We should come to know one another and grow together and nourish our relationship. My grandmother is one of my sole remaining relatives and she nourishes me. My outrageous fortune doesn't affect her, but that's because she is wise and remembers what she was taught as a young girl among the Yogo. She knew - knows, still - what it means to be a pariah. She told me it would be best for a girl like me to have a number of friends and that number ought to be zero. My grandmother is wise: even though she is a Doji now, she still remembers what she was taught as a young girl among the Yogo. I imagine she wants me to be wizened too.

Now we're asked to demonstrate our artistic sensibilities. The Academy trains many of my fellow Crane to be artisans and, I am told, I am one too: though my art involves strokes, it is not done with a brush. It can draw blood, but more than a mistake with a needle and thread. Paper is involved, when wiping clean my tool at the end of a performance.

Doji Shingo-san would probably not approve of my art at this test. I should do calligraphy instead, don't you think? One of my sensei said calligraphy is a close cousin of my art; that in the way one draws characters, one's inner self and abilities are revealed.

I hope sensei recovers from that riding accident.

I pick up the brush and clear my thoughts and think to the fire within me. It's still there. Remarkable! I listen to it; small as it is there is an ineffable strength there, an ember shining against the darkness that is my life and this curse heaping scorn upon me. It glows with an awesome power!

Take this, I think to the paper as I begin writing. My love, my anger, and all of my sorrow!

I pray I did well with what I created as art. I am not very skilled at calligraphy. But at least I hope our conversation was pleasant. Do please come again to speak with me another time.

If the curse should not take you as well.

With great patience and willpower, Mitsuko makes a better impression on Shingo than seems possible for a Crab to do.

But maybe not as well as she thought when she tried to parlay her tea and conversation into actual understanding of him.

They were... similarly uncertain about each other when it came to her attempt at a very orderly and effective diagram of proper assault tactics for heavy infantry. Shingo seemed to understand that this represented Mitsuko in some ways, but he saw through that oversimplified facade and asked what the rest of her was about. She had no answer, and discretely but urgently fled immediately thereafter.

Doji Shingo sips his tea quietly as he observes all the art being produced, all the while mulling over the results.

"Kitsu Masaru-san." He bowed, slightly, then looking to the young Lion. "You did well, and competed with honor." A slight glimmer in his eyes, ,before moving on to the next.

"Togashi Shinko-san." Another bow to the young samurai-ko. "You are a credit to your school and family." He was impressed by the zeal in the young samurai's manner.

Finally, approaching Doji Nanako. He said nothing, only looking to their art. A deep bow, and when he looked back up, there were tears that formed, moving gracefully down his cheeks. So moved by the work of art that was produced, stirring something deep in his soul. His attendant approached, and delivered to the Doji a beautful tea cup, a deep break into it fixed with inlaid gold.

Outcome:

3rd Place - Kitsu Masaru, 1 Topaz Point, 1 Glory
2nd Place - Togashi Shinko, 2 Topaz Points, 2 Glory
1st Place - Doji Nanako, 3 Topaz Points, 3 Glory, 1 Broken Teacup, fixed with gold inlay.
