Huh, this is a test I am actually at ease with. This one will do her best.
Following the blueprints was easy enough, but she found herself distracted by trying to work out the purpose and potential location of such a structure. Still, the model was entirely adequate to the task if not her finest work.

Treating injuries, she had done her share. The Kaiu's work was dangerous and involved heavy and dangerous things. She did the best she could, but was a bit unhappy with her penmanship at the end.
Success: 3 (required: 2) Opportunity: 0 Strife: 2
Huh, governmental philosophy, she had overheard discussions of such. But she had an organized mind, she could put the information together in a coherent fashion, right? She was pleased with it and handed it in, confident that she had not shamed the Crab.

In all honesty, Shinko is sort of confused as to how to about this particular challenge. Government policy? Model making? Neither of those things had been something she had spent a great deal of time on. But, she remembered the basics the monks had shown her of herbal remedies, and that kind of mentality...well, she could try it out for herself.
The medicine works fine. The other stuff...not so much

Re: [LM3] - Test of the Mind - KDA Library
Another day and another set of tests that made little sense to Haru. The focus on navigating the imperial bureaucracy for a second day in a row made a bit of sense to him and medicine is a useful skill to have even if you never use it but just like the sailing yesterday he struggled to see the importance of architecture in the lives of most samurai, it felt far to specialized to matter here when determining ones worthiness to become an adult. No amount of complaining would help him however so he just put his head down, did the best he could and kept reminding himself that eventually the things he had trained for had to be tested.

The young Kuni grinned, cracked her knuckles, and set to work.
She wasn't much of a model builder, but when a Crab needs to construct something, they can usually find a way.
Given her deep study of Medicine, that treatise came easily. She would have liked to have kept writing for most of the day, but she kept her head and saved time to make sure she did well on the last treatise.
For being as esoteric as it ended up, Mitsuko's reflections on the responsibilities of governor and governed had a certain flair typically absent from the writing of the typical Crab scholar. Probably a welcome surprise to a Phoenix scholar who would be used to extremely concrete, sequential - and honestly, boring - work from most Crab students.
Her tasks complete, the overachieving Kuni scowled at her work but then put on a polite face as she delivered it all for judging.

Re: [LM3] - Test of the Mind - KDA Library
Jun gets the principles underlying the model challenge. It tests for mastery of geometry, spatial visualization, knowledge of material properties... but dash it, it's so fiddly. Long before he's actually finished gluing and fitting together the last bits of the miniature structure--dozens of little, monotonous floor planks and roof shingles--Jun is BORED. It takes an effort of will not to leave the model half-done, especially when the tasks ahead are much more interesting.
His lack of hands-on experience with battlefield medical treatment (or any medical treatment at all, for that matter) is no impediment when the test is all theoretical and he has a library at his disposal. The field hospital measures he proposes aren't exactly orthodox, but they're plausible, each proposal backed by a neat citation to the Kakita library's collection. And an essay on the ethics of government? Jun could write that in his sleep. Probably because he spends so much waking time thinking about this stuff that he has literally dreamt about it, more than once.

Re: [LM3] - Test of the Mind - KDA Library
Isawa Kanbei's face was stoic as he sat at his desk, grading each essay, after having judged all the models. He didn't betray any emotion to one contestant or the other. Simply taking all things in stride.
"You have all completed the assignments as I asked. Three of you rose to the occasion of what I was specific in looking for. You should be proud of yourselves, and your keen intellects."
He approached Kitsuki Jun first. "Your sharp, analytical process is the trademark of your schooling. Well done." He bowed to the third place contestant.
Then to Ikoma Aya. "Your family founder was known for boisterous acts and bravado. You have shown also that those of Ikoma blood can be clear headed and deliberate in their words. Congratulations." Another bow.
Then finally, to Shiba Kuroneko. An Isawa standing before a Shiba. "As your forebear knelt before mine, you have shown incredible wisdom and alacrity of thought. Congratulations, Shiba Kuroneko-san. Please, take this satchel of blueprints." A small bag was handed forward. "As the winner of the Test of the Mind."
His lips curled to a prideful smile.
1st Place - Shiba Kuroneko, 3 Topaz Points, 3 Glory, 1 Satchel of Amateur Blueprints
2nd Place - Ikoma Aya, 2 Topaz Points, 2 Glory
3rd Place - Kitsuki Jun, 1 Topaz Point, 1 Glory
