D2 LA - Sentiment (Air) watchin' the crowd around the sketchy merchant. Kitsuki's method! I have the skill already, so I add a kept die set to *. Subtle Observer might apply here but I'll gather results w/o it first. | TN: 1 | Success: 1 / Opportunity: 3 / Strife: 1


I would suggest the following uses of those three Air opportunities:
(Air) [opp]: Learn another character in the scene’s demeanor (if an NPC) and current strife.
(Air) [2 opps]: Notice an interesting detail about a character in the scene, such as an advantage or disadvantage. At the GM’s discretion, you may establish a new detail for an NPC.

Jun's Subtle Observer distinction also represents the fact he's good at reading lips and other communication cues: "You can understand the cues that people give off while speaking, and you can read people’s lips and facial expressions to understand what they are saying, even if you cannot hear them."

[Togashi Shinko]

The Merchant was taken aback by the young Togashi, almost jumping. "Oh... just wares unique and varied. If you'd like to see them, I recommend talking to the owner of where I am bringing them. The House of the Exotic. They have to conduct inventory first." The merchant stammered, keeping their head bowed low to the Togashi. After all, Merchants were considered the lowest of the heimin. They dealt with commerce, creating nothing themselves.

"Oh? What sorts of things good merchant-san?" Shinko cranes her neck to peer, her posture opened and relaxed, as if this was an everyday conversation. "I think I have heard of it. Wares from beyond the Protected Lands. But the Crane lands are strange enough, how different are the wares from what the Kakita make?"

It's a prop for detail, even with a sincere enthusiasm.

From narrative subtle observer - you notice the way the Tortoise jisamurai adjusts their position to try and interpose themselves between the youth and the cart. The immediate way the merchant just starts sweating, and is visibly trying to watch their words.

The Tortoise Jisamurai's demeanor is Gruff.

For 2 Opps, you can tell by the way they carry themselves, they are Unnecessarily Rude (Social, Interpersonal, Water disad)

Jingyi's eyes swept over the cart and those around her as the others talked.

With all the eyes on them (between Kasumi, Jingyi, and Jun, I'll say this hits the momentum needed), the Tortoise grimaces. "What a bunch of meddling kids!" She hisses, putting a hand on the cart, as both Kaori and Shinko address her. "You think just cause you're Topaz kids, you can get a first look at this stuff before the boss does!?" Her manicured fingers pull hard on the blanket.

"P-p-please, I gotta hurry to get this cart to the owner. Any delay comes outta my pay!" The merchant keeps their head bowed.

Jingyi, Kasumi, and Jun noticed on the cart the Chop of Kasuga Touji (basic success on their rolls.)

[Togashi Shinko]

"Strange. I thought merchants advertised their wares, and I heard that the Tortoise were great merchants."

Shinko does her best to appear serenely oblivious, even as (How much is an act? She's not telling)

"I suppose that might have been the Mantis though, they are the great traders and seafarers"

Shinko seems completely unconcerned with the loomers

[Shinjo Jingyi]

"An Ide merchant would certainly be more open to new customers." Jingyi shook her head. "We'll just have to go to the shop."

"Goodness, we wouldn't presume against your lord's prerogatives," Jun says, calm and reasonable and more or less unruffled by the Tortoise samurai's rudeness. [courtesy/earth!] "My friends and I didn't realize these wares weren't for sale yet, or that you're a merchant-agent, Tortoise-sama. We thought you were a customer of this vendor, that's all."

At the same time, he slips the foreign-made pipe Shinko handed to him last night out of his sleeve, rolling it between his fingers with an inattentive air.

"We might be interested after your lord tallies the goods, though."

[Yukikaze no Kasumi]

For her part, Kasumi looked the Tortoise up and down.

Grinned.

"Be seein' ya."

And then she pointedly strolled off.

She had what she needed.

The jisamurai was suprised when they came to be surrounded by a bunch of youth. The merchant quickly brings their covering back over the cart.

"Nani? Oh... hello there, ronin-san." The Tortoise looked to Kaori, stepping back slightly, looking them up and down. Ronin are nothing new to the Tortoise, but there is a reputation about their relationship with those who walk the path of waves.

"Gomenasai, I am Kaori." She decided to let out her family name, for now. Besides, it's not like it was a true family ,in a way, neh?

"I was just hoping to speak to such a discerning samurai sa yourself. Word has spread of your clan to all places." She glanced around. "I was hoping to ask...can one buy something...interesting in such a place? I may not an interested party."

After all, Miya Tetsu-sama would surely be interested in any illicit activities in Tsuma, after all.

The Jisamurai was still incredulous about all the attention. "The House of the Exotic has lots of different goods, child." She took a half step, eyeing the ronin up and down.

[Shinjo Jingyi]

The Unicorn, meanwhile, had turned her attention to Aiyama, quietly praising the dog for remaining calm in the crowd. She couldn't say the same about the monkey who wanted to explore, but she was now holding Odoruhonō firmly in her arms.

Although Rokugani orthography doesn't quite permit a certain specific play on the words you, me, and, uh, burro, Jun understands the local equivalent in the Tortoise's meaning. "Thanks for the advice, Tortoise-sama. I appreciate your consideration," he says with a polite nod. "My kinswoman Togashi-san does too, I'm sure. Right, Togashi-san?"

... though for all his sensibly polite air, he doesn't put the suspicious pipe away. A glance at Kaori says, Oh boy, I have got to tell you about this.

Quote-linking Shinko and Kaori just because I know they're both crazy busy too.,,
