[Shiba Jiro]

"Hmm... I think were thinking of different songs," he says with a smile. "But that sounds fun too. Though not so surprising that work songs might share early morning themes."

[Yukikaze no Kasumi]

"Y'sure? Goes a bit like this..."

She lowered her voice and didn't exactly sing full-throated, but she carried the tune.

He listens with a smile nods with the short tune.

"Definitely different. Not quite so upbeat and a bit more freeform in the singing for the one I'm thinking about."

He lowers his voice to a similar level.

"Well, it’s early in the morn –in the morning, baby

He pauses.

"It eventually grows more... colorful... as the verses continue. More slow and meandering. Most of the time when you hear it it's accompanied by the sound of a dozen or more axes or hammers splitting wood or breaking stone in time."

"Ah, well, our drunken sailor eventually gets put in the bilges and made to drink 'em, has his throat slit with a rusty razor, and so forth..."

[Shiba Jiro]

"Hmm... this one's not quite so violent, but it gets very racy," he admits, with a slight blush. "It's a lot less embarrassing to sing those lines when you are doing so as one voice in a dozen. Especially with how crude they get."

[Yukikaze no Kasumi]

"Ah, one of those."

She arched an eyebrow and grinned.

"Yeah, we've got those too."

[Shiba Jiro]

"The ones that I've learned among those that work the land either tend to be about a lover in some form, or about how difficult life is," he says with a returned grin. "The former are more fun, if less appropriate. So yeah, I'll sing them when I'm working with a group that knows them, or when I'm all alone and there's nobody around to hear me wailing about such subjects."

[Yukikaze no Kasumi]

"Ours tend t'be about either how tough life aboard ship is, or about stuff y'don't typically get t'do aboard ship. Plenty'a songs about booze, f'rexample, since y'tend t'be kept on short rations'a the stuff when at sea."

[Shiba Jiro]

"Songs about booze as opposed to actual drinking songs I imagine then, if there is a distinction?" he asks, curious about that.

[Yukikaze no Kasumi]

"Well, not really. But sometimes y'sing a drinkin' song when there's nothin' t'drink."

[Shiba Jiro]

"Or when you sneak a drink? Not enough to get in the way of duty though," he says, taking a small sip.

[Yukikaze no Kasumi]

"Hard t'do that aboard ship. But y'get a ration at th'end of most watches."

[Shiba Jiro]

"I see. Well, I suppose there are probably a few folks that likely prefer to trade that ration for favors from fellow crew members. That's probably what I'd do with them. Assuming it happens."

[Yukikaze no Kasumi]

"Oh, we've been known to pool it all if someone's gettin' married, or lost a friend, or if they're just doin' well... but usually, we all take our share pretty jealously."

[Shiba Jiro]

"Makes sense. I'll have to remember that when we're having a drink. Don't let my cup go unattended or it might be empty when I look at it again."

[Yukikaze no Kasumi]

"Well, I mean, we have got a bit of a rep, yeah?"

She winked.

[Shiba Jiro]

"HA!" he says in a laugh that was almost too loud for the tea house. Then covers his mouth and ducks his head down a bit. "I certainly don't intend to let you liberate my sake so easily."

[Yukikaze no Kasumi]

"I'll have t'work somethin' out. Or might be it's all a plot of mine t'get you hammered..."

[Shiba Jiro]

"I see I definitely need to be very careful around you..." he says with a pause for effect, "...if I'm worried about what will happen if I'm not. But I'm not too worried."

"Careful, y'might wake up on a boat out t'sea if you're not careful..."
