[Shiba Jiro]

"D'you enjoy being on the land?"

She chuckled.

"It's... you're askin' me to describe it, but it'd be like me asking you how it feels to breathe. It's... different from, well..."

She gestured to their surroundings.

"Alla this. Some ways it's real simple, the difference- like how our bushi don't use their katanas much, 'cause any weapon you carry aboard a ship is exposed to salt spray and the danger of goin' over the side. It's... different."

"I do enjoy my breathing exercises, but I do take your point. There are likely so many things that you do or are used to that are practical out there, and we would consider different or odd. But that makes me curious, of course."

He smiles at that, then greets the new arrival with a bow from his seat.

Thank the fortunes, another Crab! she thought. Yes, I remember now, the Hida sent a . . . Kuni to represent their school?

She slowly approached the table, bowed and took an open space. "This one is Kaiu Taura. It is an honor to be in such august company for this noble competition."

"And an honor to meet you Kaiu-san. Welcome to the table."

[Shinjo Jingyi]

"Lucky for you he was friendly." the Shiba joked. "I'm curious how long everyone's journey here took."

"I took my time." she shrugged. "Several weeks have passed since I left home."

[Kuni Mitsuko]

Thank the fortunes, another Crab! she thought. Yes, I remember now, the Hida sent a . . . Kuni to represent their school?

She slowly approached the table, bowed and took an open space. "This one is Kaiu Taura. It is an honor to be in such august company for this noble competition."

Her fellow Crab nods respectfully to the Kaiu.

"Good evening, Kaiu-san. I'm pleased to be representing our clan with you."

[Kaiu Taura]

"And an honor to meet you Kaiu-san. Welcome to the table."

"Thank you, Pheonix-san," she nodded politely.

Her fellow Crab nods respectfully to the Kaiu.

"Good evening, Kaiu-san. I'm pleased to be representing our clan with you."

"And I with you, Kuni-san. Let us both do our best for the Crab," she gave the Kuni a shy smile for just a second.

[Shiba Ichiro]

There was certainly no conspiracy to have Ishiken at each table but, still, Ichiro found their way to the table lacking one - though already beset by Shiba.

They offer a bow to those already assembled at the table before unfurling a small scroll from their satchel and turning it to the table.

This one is Shiba Ichiro, priest of the Phoenix. They are without speech so apologize for not giving proper greeting.

It is held out for a few beats to ensure any have a chance to read before it is furled and placed back among their other scrolls. The speechless Shiba then offers a warm smile to those gathered before sitting.

[Shiba Jiro]

A seated bow is offered to the mute Shiba. "Good evening cousin. A pleasure."

[Shiba Haru]

"Welcome cousin, I hope you have had a pleasant afternoon." He bowed to the arriving Shiba.

[Shiba Ichiro]

Ichiro nods as they direct the smile towards Haru.

[Yukikaze no Kasumi]

"Y'can't talk?"

Kasumi blinked.

"Well, that seems like an unfair advantage! Th' rest of us can open our mouths to sound like idjits!"

[Kaiu Taura]

Taura looks to the Mantis. "We must do our best not to then. Does not the Tao itself say, 'Express yourself completely, then keep quiet?'"

She looks to the mute Pheonix. "Do you write then? A slate board with chalk perhaps?" Her mind turning over ways to communicate without speaking.

[Shiba Jiro]

Jiro smiled at the mute Shiba that was being bombarded with questions and comments. "A good question. Hopefully your handwriting is more legible than my brother's Ichiro-san."

[Shiba Ichiro]

"Y'can't talk?"

Kasumi blinked.

"Well, that seems like an unfair advantage! Th' rest of us can open our mouths to sound like idjits!"

The laugh, perhaps somewhat disturbingly, is silent as well.

She looks to the mute Pheonix. "Do you write then? A slate board with chalk perhaps?" Her mind turning over ways to communicate without speaking.

They pat their scroll satchel and the paper and writing implements within and nod. True they avoided using it when possible as it was a limited resource but when in-depth communication was necessary it was always at hand.

[Kaiu Taura]

Taura smiles and nods. She idly eats as she thinks about ways to, perhaps, help the silent Pheonix. It nice to have a practical problem to distract her from all of this . . . courtliness.

[Yukikaze no Kasumi]

"Maybe y'could work out some hand signals?"

[Shiba Haru]

"Maybe y'could work out some hand signals?"

"That only helps if the person you are trying to communicate with knows what the hand signals mean. I for one would not be opposed to learning such a thing but teaching the entire empire may prove trickier than teaching my brother how to sail; but only just."

[Shiba Jiro]

"Or just an attendant interpreter that learns those hand signs? A monk or lay person that could also help with duties?" Jiro says with a shrug.

[Shiba Haru]

"Once Ichiro-san has a yojimbo I imagine that will be part of their duties."

[Ikoma Aya]

After a long while looking at the other tables, the Ikoma quietly moved towards the second one. Seeing the ongoing conversation, she refrained from interrupting it, simply greeting the others with a polite bow and taking a seat silently as she took notice of the food and drinks available.

"More than a few military commanders are great at communicating with the tessen. Maybe a fan language?" Jiro says with a smile. "Command the courtroom."
