[Funegao no Hirame]

"Sharkskin." Hirame flashed back a grin of his own. "My parents thought I ought to look nice for the Topaz, and for my betrothal." He held up an arm. "It's quite comfortable, actually, and durable, too."

Setting down his chopsticks, he sat back, crossing his arms. "Oh, sure, lots of traveling. I've been all up and down the coast, and out besides. Lots of places to see, if you've got the will and the opportunity to do so."

[Akodo Michi]

"Shark skin", Michi commented thoughtfully. Placing her chopsticks down she faced the Mantis directly. "Is that a traditional formal garment of your people?"

[Funegao no Hirame]

Hirame considered that a moment. "I mean, yeah, it's what we wear when we want to look our best. Formal's a bit different on a ship, and we don't have court exactly, not like Crane courts." He glanced around; actually, this feast wasn't so unlike a Mantis feast.

He shrugged, smiling. "But hey, we're Mantis. We adapt."

[Akodo Michi]

"Finery has no place on a vessel of the sea, I would imagine", she said, entertaining ideas from her previous discussion with a Mantis. "The layers would simply pull one under the water."

A nod of understanding.

"Though we are not on a ship, if that is what you wear then it is not adaptation, but proper for you. Just as a Crane clothes themselves in silk and a Unicorn may wear boots or a great belt of leather. Other people's methods are new to me, and I must ask after them to understand."

[Funegao no Hirame]

"I had just that thought earlier today." Hirame agreed with nod of his own. "If nothing else, protecting your things from salt-water is quite the challenge. If it's not durable, you're rolling the dice, and a fine silk kimono will end up a puddle of rags."

He nodded again, smiling. "Maybe that's part of what the Topaz is for? Let's a bunch of samurai from a bunch of places meet each other, when they might not otherwise." It seemed reasonable, even if he didn't know the answer.
