Am I a bad Phoenix fan? Probably. Although I maintain that at least during AEG's run, the Crane/Phoenix "Alliance" was spectacularly worthless to both parties.

I mean, I'm certainly no Phoenix fan, but I would agree that sort of theoretical rather than actual alliance wasn't much good to anybody. Only thing it really accomplished was explaining why two small, fairly anti-military clans weren't warring with each other, which... Yeah, no kidding they didn't want to attack each other!

I mean, I'm certainly no Phoenix fan, but I would agree that sort of theoretical rather than actual alliance wasn't much good to anybody. They also did nothing to address one another's weaknesses. It was broadly an alliance of "more of the same."

Crane: Great at court, okay at magic, okay at military(really, should have been pretty damn good at military given their long dance with the Lion)

Phoenix: Great at magic, supposedly pretty good at court (although never actually written that way) and allegedly pants at conventional military (although supposedly they made up for this with phenomenal magical power, not that it ever actually helped them win a war since they were never willing to unleash their full capability or something like that).

The extent of the "alliance" was usually one courtier from the faction the story wasn't focused on going, "yeah, uh, maybe make peace?" before being dismissed because "of course you want us to stop punching your buddy in the face, you wanna make something of it?"

Zero meaningful help most of the time. It was never, "the Daidoji fleet will help secure your coast against the Mantis attacks," or, "the Firestorm Legion will not allow the Lion to overrun the temples of the Asahina Lands."

I was wondering what AEG was doing these days since they sold off most of their strong licenses (they only have Smash Up! and Thunderstone nowadays I think?).

Heritage-table as a strong part of character creation is something I'm glad to see returned. I always liked those in older editions.

I just wish the damn things weren't so generic in most cases... the Imperial Bastard in the family woodpile coming up for BOTH Mantis in this game was a bit... feh.

EDIT: My other option was Great Discovery, which would have entailed giving Boat Rat Kasumi a scholar skill. I was thus basically stuck choosing the one that would do the least damage to my baseline concept. Not a fan.

I have some vague memory of this too, but not where it showed up. I tend to pick a couple of tables, roll once and then pick which one fits better, because I like a little randomness.
