"Well, seein' as marryin' an Imperial Prince an' becomin' th' Sea Empress is prob'ly out, I'll likely get assigned somewhere in th' fleet and try t'work my way up t'cap'n."

She paused. Grimaced.

"That's kinda th'limit on what a lone samurai of th' Mantis can really push for. In terms'a marriage, s'far as I know, nobody's even lookin'."

'Better than most, a lot that didn't place in any tests," he says with a smile. "People here are pretty consistently down on their own performances. We're competing against the best graduates this season from all schools. If you scored points on the tests, you are definitely among the best."

"I scored those in a test that was practically built t'place a Mantis. Haven't impressed since. An' it's not losin' t'other contestants I mind- it's facing' a test I can't fuckin' do. I feel like about half th'time I simply fall on my damn face."

"You are fine. I can't do half the tests either. I had to actually cause pain and injury intentionally to even stay in the saddle on one test. We have our strengths and weaknesses. You're going to beat yourself up over it, but that is because you have more passion and determination than most of the people here. All the things you think you can't do? It's just because you haven't learned it yet, not because you lack the potential. You have the drive to accomplish anything and I see it in you. Part of why I was drawn to you."

He smiles warmly at her.

"You are and always will be one of the most amazing people I have had the chance to know Kasumi."
