He waved a hand again. "Hey, maybe next time, you'll be Captain-sama. And I'll be your first mate."

Hirame's expression turned more serious. "But really. We don't pay much attention to that sort of thing in the Mantis. And our clans are kinda alike, right? So, we're equals." Hirame nodded firmly. "Like, brother and sister, maybe. Except we don't have to fight for the best bunk, or the last yam, or whatever."

Hirame chuckled, shaking his head. "Yeah, sure! Kyuden Kakita or Kyuden Doji; if I'm still with the Funegao, we make port there about twice a year. And once I make captain... who knows?" Hirame shrugged. "I mean, real captain. Although I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job here..." Grinning he, reached back to paddle a bit for emphasis.

"But yeah, we'll stay in touch." He said. "Absolutely! Do you know what duties you're gonna have, after all this is over?"

"I dunno, probably a guardian I reckon, look after the plains. That's one of our most important duties and I'd like to be a part of it. Although a lot of the work is just waiting and watching."

"Uhhhh..." Hirame frowned. "What do you have to watch for on the plains? And just how much plains are there? How many plains? Which one is right?" Hirame's frown deepened. Mantis didn't usually have to talk about plains.

"The son of heaven himself declared them sacrosanct. They're some of the most beautiful and bountiful lands in the empire. Our duty as a clan is to make sure nobody defiles them...not...not that many people try to. But if bandits set up camp there or some hunters try to move in, then we deal with 'em."

"Well, you can visit if you get permission. But we'd never dream of throwing a part on the plains. Even when we built watchtowers we carried the wood over from our own lands. We like parties though! And ceremonies. Start of the harvest, end of the harvest the new year. We can get pretty rowdy you know."

He tilted his head, frowning for a moment, then nodded. "Alright then, it's decided. You and me, we're gonna throw a party sometime. Maybe not here and now. But once we're adults. I bet if you and I put our heads together, we could come up with something fun for everyone!"

He frowned again. "Although... perhaps we should consult Ahiru-san or someone for the fancy bits."

"We'll figure it out." Hirame said confidently, waving a hand. "Maybe I'll only be able to make port for a few days." His lips twisted. "Or maybe my retinue of loyal Crane servants will be able to carry me all the way to Sparrow lands on a palanquin. We'll just have to wait and see."

A breeze ruffled Hirame's hair, making him glance about with a frown. "Might be a good idea to head back. It's easy enough to maneuver this thing, but it's really meant for calm days." TUrning, he began to paddle again, carrying them back towards shore.

She nods at his suggestion, not wanting to be swept down the river full of dangerous sharks.

"This was...real nice. You're a good captain Hirame-san. That's gonna be true whether yer a Crane or a Mantis, facts is facts."

Hirame looked over his shoulder at Rin. "Thanks, Rin-san. That means a lot." He took a deep breath. "I've still got a lot to figure out with this thing. Who knew marriage could be so challenging?" He chuckled dryly. He knew.

Skillfully, he guided the boat back to harbor. The maiden voyage of the boat crewed by Funegao no Hirame and Suzume Rin, a rousing success!
