"I'm good at gifts." Hirame said, smiling. "Let me know if you need any help with that. Uh..." He frowned, scratching his head. "Picking out a good gift usually means knowing the person, but I won't be the least offended if you don't tell me who she is." One of the Lion, maybe? Who else would care that much about ancestors? Although Rin apparently knew, so...

The question actually made Hirame blush a bit. "Well... less then you might think. I've just got style." He tossed his hair back, posing dramatically. Grinning, he shook his head. "But, I mean, it's a boat. So it's mostly just looks. Some teasing. And then... you run into each other." Hirame cleared his throat. "I mean, you're always running into people, so that's normal. But two people who are into each other maybe run into each other a little more, and linger a bit." He shrugged. "It's as weird as it sounds."

[Suzume Rin]

"Oh, well it's just...you know, I'm not sure they would want it going round. Gotta protect people's reputation, right?"
Nodding along at his explanation, wide eyed.

"Right...so you just sorta... end up spending more time with eachother than usual. Like everyone goes to help with the harvest, and you two end up working alongside one another? I can kinda picture that. I don't really know how to give someone a good look, least not that sort. But I'll work on it. It's normal too be nervous though? I really don't wanna mess it up or say the wrong thing."

[Funegao no Hirame]

"It's is normal to be nervous!" Hirame assured Rin. "Would it help if I told you that I was nervous to meet my fiancee?"

He frowned. "But what do you mean you don't know how to give someone a good look? It's like... uh..." Putting a coy smile on his face, he kinda swung his head to the right, shoulders following a moment later, then reversed it, head going to the left, then shoulders.

"... you know?" He said.

[Suzume Rin]

"It's is normal to be nervous!" Hirame assured Rin. "Would it help if I told you that I was nervous to meet my fiancee?"

He frowned. "But what do you mean you don't know how to give someone a good look? It's like... uh..." Putting a coy smile on his face, he kinda swung his head to the right, shoulders following a moment later, then reversed it, head going to the left, then shoulders.

"... you know?" He said.

Rin feels her hat flutter
"Uh...you gotta be careful doing that to folks, it's a powerful look. Kinda reminds me of blue steel that...And you? Nervous? I didn't think you were allowed Hirame-sama!"

Solemnly, Hirame nodded, arms still crossed. "Yeah... I mean, there's plenty of stuff that I'm not nervous about. How I do in this Championship, or pretty much anything I've gotta do as a Mantis Samurai. Ask me to fight a dozen Lion, and hey, I'll go down swinging."

Hirame frowned, shaking his head. "I don't know, there's something so, I don't know, long term about this sort of thing. Like if I screw up, really do something wrong, that's my future. Begin as you mean to go on, my Captain told me. I was worried I'd get it wrong."

[Suzume Rin]

Solemnly, Hirame nodded, arms still crossed. "Yeah... I mean, there's plenty of stuff that I'm not nervous about. How I do in this Championship, or pretty much anything I've gotta do as a Mantis Samurai. Ask me to fight a dozen Lion, and hey, I'll go down swinging."

Hirame frowned, shaking his head. "I don't know, there's something so, I don't know, long term about this sort of thing. Like if I screw up, really do something wrong, that's my future. Begin as you mean to go on, my Captain told me. I was worried I'd get it wrong."

"Right! Because you might ruin your life if you make a terrible impression on your betrothed and end up in a loveless marriage."
Long pause

"I mean, you won't though. My captain's got a pretty smart head on his shoulders. Only a matter of time until she finds out how wonderful you are. I mean, she's already seen the jacket and your smile, so you probably made a great impression."
Cocking her head

"Are you marrying into her Clan, or she into yours?"

[Funegao no Hirame]

"Yes." Hirame said, grimacing. "That was more or less my thought."

He took a deep breath. "I hope so. I mean, I think she likes me. I like her..." He grimaced. "She doesn't like the jacket, though. And that makes me..." Hirame swallowed. He hadn't meant to talk about it this much. "-about what else she might not like."

The question made him chuckle dryly. "Actually, we're not sure yet. We're using the tourney to settle it. Whoever does better chooses the direction of the marriage. One more stake attached to this thing."

[Suzume Rin]

"Yes." Hirame said, grimacing. "That was more or less my thought."

He took a deep breath. "I hope so. I mean, I think she likes me. I like her..." He grimaced. "She doesn't like the jacket, though. And that makes me..." Hirame swallowed. He hadn't meant to talk about it this much. "-about what else she might not like."

Rin blinks
"Well, none of us are perfect. I'm sure it's just the jacket. I mean, you're more than a jacket, you got kimonos...sandals, hairties."

What Rin clearly can't get her head around is using the tournament to decide who marries into what.
"Well whose idea was that? Darn foolish...if you'll pardon my language Hirame-sama."

"It was her idea, actually." Hirame smiled. "But it was a great idea! Gambling her future on a test of skill? That takes guts, real guts!" He grinned. "If I wasn't gonna marry her, I might be into her."

"That last sentence...you're gonna want to rephrase that I reckon. Maybe...uhh...hmm...well, something different anyway. It was her idea was it? Well, that's very bold...unless she's just so much better than you it's a done deal. Now that would be a way to start a marriage."

He shook his head. "At this point, she's outplaced me in more events, but only three to two, and I'm the one who placed." He frowned. "You know, we didn't exactly define terms for better. That's something we're probably gonna have to work out, unless one of us indisputably pulls ahead."

"Or you could just talk about it like normal people That sounds like a good idea Hirame-sama. Probably wanna get that sorted ahead of time. Otherwise things might get a bit...dramatic."

"I'm sure you'll look good in blue and white though."

[Funegao no Hirame]

"Huh?" She'd said something, but Hirame hadn't quite heard. Well, whatever. "Yeah, we'll get it sorted." He said confidently.

"Ugh!" Hirame said, grinning, stretching his leg out to nudge Rin with his foot. "Don't you start, too. Everyone seems to be talking about that lately." He shrugged. "I mean, I'm not gonna argue with the basic facts. I would look good in blue and white."

Still chuckling, Hirame looked at Rin. "How would you think about moving into a different Clan?"

[Suzume Rin]

"Huh?" She'd said something, but Hirame hadn't quite heard. Well, whatever. "Yeah, we'll get it sorted." He said confidently.

"Ugh!" Hirame said, grinning, stretching his leg out to nudge Rin with his foot. "Don't you start, too. Everyone seems to be talking about that lately." He shrugged. "I mean, I'm not gonna argue with the basic facts. I would look good in blue and white."

Still chuckling, Hirame looked at Rin. "How would you think about moving into a different Clan?"

"Hey, not everyone can look good in blue'n'white, it's a blessing that."
Looking up at the nudge
"Different Clan? Me?...I dunno I guess. Probably depends on the clan, maybe even the family. If I was supposed to be a courtier all dressed up all the time and having to...you know, twist the truth I'd be uncomfortable. But if I had a good role for me I reckon it wouldn't be so bad. What about you though?"

[Funegao no Hirame]

Hirame let out a puff of breath. "I don't know. I don't have to think about a bunch of different clans. I've just got one."

Almost idly, he waggled the oar a little bit. "Yeah, I don't think I'd like that much either. Would the Crane put me to good use? My captain offered me a position on his ship. I take that, maybe I can make captain by the time I'm twenty-one. If I'm lucky and bold enough." Hirame grinned.

But then he sighed. "Joining another clan, none of that's true anymore."

[Suzume Rin]

Hirame let out a puff of breath. "I don't know. I don't have to think about a bunch of different clans. I've just got one."

Almost idly, he waggled the oar a little bit. "Yeah, I don't think I'd like that much either. Would the Crane put me to good use? My captain offered me a position on his ship. I take that, maybe I can make captain by the time I'm twenty-one. If I'm lucky and bold enough." Hirame grinned.

"Crane got lots of boats though? And your betrothed, she's from a real important family, right? Why'd you think you won't be a captain if you marry in? Sure the Crane ain't exactly renowned for being lucky and bold, but I doubt they turn their noses up at folk who are."

"That's all true." Hirame agreed. "And I don't think they'll turn their noses up at me for being luck and bold. I think they might because I'm rough, and I always say what I'm thinking, and instead of nice art I make nightmare dolls." He chuckled, even though it was only a little funny. "And because I used to be a Mantis."

He shrugged. "I guess the Imperial Princess in my family line might help. I don't know. There's probably a tally somewhere for what gets you points, and what takes them away."

[Suzume Rin]

"That's all true." Hirame agreed. "And I don't think they'll turn their noses up at me for being luck and bold. "Now wouldn't that be something? We all just got a bunch of numbers which describe us and they go up and down throughout your lives. Hirame-sama, dollmaker minus 5 status. But Hirame-sama, imperial princess, plus 10 status!"
Shaking her head
"Mine's nice and easy Sparrow, plus no status, plus some yams."

Hirame laughed. "Yeah, that would make things a lot easier. Then I could just measure my number against the requirement, and I'd know."

Rin goes to bob her head before realising that's probably against the spirit of it.
"Just don't wanna be disrespectful is all."
