[Funegao no Hirame]

"The bristles were the hair." Hirame explained, sighing. "And I got some paper to make it a little jacket. I think it was actually worse than it sounds." From his expression, Hirame wasn't sure whether to laugh, or, if not cry, at least experience some serious manfeelings.

"Yeah..." He shot Rin a glance. "It's the same on a Mantis vessel. Sometimes you can care about who does what, but sometimes stuff just needs doing, and it doesn't matter who's supposed to."

Since the boat wasn't going anywhere for the moment, he turned around, half-sitting on the raised side. "Sounds like it's sorta the same for you? Unless ditch digging's just a hobby?"

Since the boat wasn't going anywhere for the moment, he turned around, half-sitting on the raised side. "Sounds like it's sorta the same for you? Unless ditch digging's just a hobby?"

"Oh yeah, I dig ditches recreationally"
Rion chuckles as she opens up her snack box and offers the captain the first bun, as is the commanding officer's right.

"Yeah, I think it's the same for us, something needs doing it needs doing. There's not time to argue around who should have the right to do it all proper a couple weeks from now. You know, Hirame-sama-"
Tilting her head
"-Our clans, they're so far apart. And you got your ships, and your money and your...weird fruits. And we got yams. But in some ways...they ain't so different."

[Funegao no Hirame]

"You mean mangoes?" Hirame asked. "They're pretty good, yeah. But they go off quickly, so we gotta ship 'em right over here."

Slowly, he nodded. "Yeah. I mean, like you said, there's differences. We've got mangoes, you've got yams You've got stories, we've got..." Hirame frowned, "-boats. But I guess we do a lot of things in the same way. Practical, like."

He frowned. "And other clans don't seem to like that much. I know that shouldn't bug me, but it does anyway."

[Suzume Rin]

"You mean mangoes?" Hirame asked. "They're pretty good, yeah. But they go off quickly, so we gotta ship 'em right over here."

Slowly, he nodded. "Yeah. I mean, like you said, there's differences. We've got mangoes, you've got yams You've got stories, we've got..." Hirame frowned, "-boats. But I guess we do a lot of things in the same way. Practical, like."

He frowned. "And other clans don't seem to like that much. I know that shouldn't bug me, but it does anyway."

"Well 'course it would annoy you. Ma always told me you shouldn't put stock in the opinions of people who don't know better. But when there's a whole lo of them and they say they do know better, well then it's hard not to listen. Way I see it."

Rin absent mindedly chomps down on a bun, now starting to get used to the boat's rocking motions
"Every clan thinks they got the right way of doing things. So either everyone is wrong but whoever you are, or...maybe they're lotsa ways of doing things?"
Furrowing her brow though
"But some things are just wrong though...I guess that's the hard part. What's wrong and what's just a different way of doing things?"

Hirame had eaten half of his bun in a single bite, and scarfed down the rest of it really quickly. "Yfff..." He swallowed. "Sorry. Yeah. Exactly. All of that you just said." He waved his now empty hand at her.

A quick glance to make sure they weren't drifting too much, and Hirame sighed. "I don't know. Sometimes I feel like they know better, but sometimes I feel like we do. Great Clans don't really like hearing that."

A few moments, and then: "You think my jacket looks good, right?"

A quick glance to make sure they weren't drifting too much, and Hirame sighed. "I don't know. Sometimes I feel like they know better, but sometimes I feel like we do. Great Clans don't really like hearing that."

A few moments, and then: "You think my jacket looks good, right?"

"Huh? Your jacket?"
Rin peers at is closely, clearly taking the jacket inspection very seriously

"I reckon so, it's kinda different to anything I've seen before. Cut's nice, looks waterproof, not sure 'bout the texture."

"Well... here!" Hirame held out his forearm, giving it a little shake. "It's comfortable. Smooth, so long as you rub it in the right direction. Waterproof, too, which is pretty important when you're on a boat. Everything gets wet. Seriously."

Rin extends her hand and rubs it one way, then the other.
"Oh that's quite something! Why's it like that? Rough one way but nice the other?"
Absent mindedly
"I'd hate to be getting wet all the time, dunno how folks would put up with it."

"It's how the shark is. Something about their skin. I don't know." Hirame said. "I think they smell blood, so if their skin can cut you, they can smell you better. But it's still in the water, so it's soft..." Hirame chuckled, shaking his head. "I don't know, I'm just guessing."

He shrugged. "You get used to it. I don't know. I can't imagine living in the same place all the time. If I was on land..." Hirame sighed, leaning back again. "Maybe I could get a horse or something. Or just learn to walk really fast. Do some travelling. I wouldn't mind seeing more inland places. Maybe visit Sparrow lands, try fresh yams."

"It's how the shark is. Something about their skin. I don't know." Hirame said. "I think they smell blood, so if their skin can cut you, they can smell you better. But it's still in the water, so it's soft..." Hirame chuckled, shaking his head. "I don't know, I'm just guessing."

He shrugged. "You get used to it. I don't know. I can't imagine living in the same place all the time. If I was on land..." Hirame sighed, leaning back again. "Maybe I could get a horse or something. He grinned. "You got that right. I don't even have my own bed; I sleep in shifts with another guy. If I become a full officer I get more space. And once I'm captain... well, but that's a long ways off." He sighed pleasantly. "I have been enjoying the privacy lately, actually."

Rin thinks she spots of one these sharks they're discussing...but it's a log...and then- no, log and that-....Carp.

"You ain't lonely on your own though? Bit of a change to go from that to your own room."

"Not even my own bed." Hirame nodded. "I mean, every bit of space we save is either more cargo we can take on, or supplies, or just being smaller and leaner and faster. It makes sense, even if it is a bit hard."

Without looking, he reached back, paddling briefly to adjust back towards the middle of the river. He shrugged. "I expect I might. But hey, we Mantis like our shoreleave, too. And it's not like I'm all alone; I can bang on the wall, and Kasumi's there. And hey, I've got my first mate!" He grinned at her. "First mate and fishing partner. That'll keep me from missing waking up to seeing someone's feet dangling about a foot from my head."

Rin brightens
"Yeah! You just went and found a land crew."
Of which Rin was first mate, oh yeah.

"I kinda did the same...just not from a boat perspective. I'm met all sorts of people and..."
Rin's nose pinkens at a memory and she decides to turn and stare down the river
"Lots of them have been really nice, lots of new experiences."

Hirame wasn't super perceptive, but he did have a certain teenage boy's intuition.

"Ohhhhhhhh?" Grinning, he leaned to the side, peering around at her. "Are you blushing, Rin-san? Sounds like there's a story there. And you're all about telling stories, right?"

He made his expression serious. "Besides, there's no secrets between a captain and his first mate." Not strictly true, but, well, whatever.

Hirame wasn't super perceptive, but he did have a certain teenage boy's intuition.

"Ohhhhhhhh?" Grinning, he leaned to the side, peering around at her. "Are you blushing, Rin-san? Sounds like there's a story there. And you're all about telling stories, right?"

He made his expression serious. "Besides, there's no secrets between a captain and his first mate." Not strictly true, but, well, whatever.

"I'm just...well it's hot out too, could be blushing from that maybe."
Of course, that had just made her go even more red

"I ain't gonna name names, since I'm no gossip. But this uh. This nice samurai, they um. They said they didn't not like me. And we umm...."
Turning around and giving Hirame what she tries to make a firm look
"This is gonna stay between us, right? It was...it was pretty crazy, I didn't think someone like this would happen. Nice though."

"Nope." Hirame said, smirking. "It's not the heat."

As she spoke, he nodded solemnly. "I swear it. No one will get it out of me!" He mimed tying his lips shut.

"Okay....okay so we umm, we went out and found this nice little clearing. And uh..."
Rin locks her hands together and worries them

"We...held hands, and I sorta touched her collarbone. Never done anything like it before. Hadn't even washed or made myself decent before hand or anything."

Rin realises her hands are bunned again and hurriedly washes them in the river, giving her an excuse to look away.

"Then I told her stories the whole afternoon, and she just listened to all of 'em! Nobody listens to all of 'em."

Hirame smiled gentle, watching Rin talk about this person. "Hey, that's great, Rin-san. I'm glad." He tilted his head. "Just how many stories are we talking, here?"

"Umm, well she wanted to know about my ancestors, so it was a lot. Guess we went back about...6 generations? I only had one or two stories for the ones further back though, limit to what I can remember, specially if they were boring."
Why couldn't her great great great grandmother have lived a more exciting life.

"See her again?...I...I guess I will, I mean, I hope I do. Certainly be seeing them around. I ain't sure how it works. Poetry sounds good, and gifts. And you go out and do stuff with them too."
Turning back to look at Hirame

"Hirame-sama, you're all...you know, and you have that nice jacket. You musta done this stuff before, how'd you do it on boats?"
