Masaru nodded "Yes a duel could be issued if the Soshi doubted the Sincerity and integrity of the Yasuki. Otherwise I believe this is simply the risk when one rents out a building. At the end of the day the Yasuki own the building and can use it as they see fit."

[Kakita Yuji]

Yuji frowned a bit.

"I'm sorry, Kakita-sama, Kitsu-san, but those answers would have been marked as wrong." he says, taking no joy in that analysis. He looks to the rest of the table for other answers.

[Isawa Kiriko]

Kiriko simply stayed silently for a long time before finally saying, "I don't even have a guess for that one. Who oversees what... I'm a little lost on that."

[Seppun Urusai]

Urusai considers. While economics are...less...effective oversight of holdings is a worthy thing for samurai, and obligatory for the more noble.

"Such interesting names these characters have," he opines. "But the Soshi would go to their lord with the complaint, who would then address it to the Yasuki's lord--and, because it is inter-Clan, the Magistracy or the Families, likely a representative of the Miya or the Otomo, would have the right to oversee the negotiations and discussion. Or so it seems to me--but I will admit that I have much to learn in that regard."

"Indeed. I would assume they were so named to try and avoid implicating an actual person. Much like giving odd names to characters in plays, otherwise someone might thing they were being publicly called out for disreputable behavior." he agreed.

He sipped his tea.

"But definitely a difficult question. The records indicate two possible paths:

The first being that Methula should stay in the building and ask Okami to take the matter to her lord. I believe the reasoning here is that Methula is essentially maintaining a holding for their lord. They could no sooner vacate it when it's former holder asks them to, than you could a village that had changed hands in the course of the previous year's winter court. And of course, were you to leave such a village, it would be difficult indeed to regain your claim on it.


Alternatively, the records suggest you could summon a clan magistrate to mediate the dispute, instead of an emerald magistrate. I'll admit that I had to look into the reasoning of that. My initial impulse had been as Kakita-sama's, that since the dispute involved multiple clans, an emerald magistrate would be needed. However, the charter of the Emerald magistrates forbid them from involving themselves in matters of local law enforcement. When you are in another clan's lands, you do agree to abide by their law enforcement. You could not steal a painting in front of a local guard and claim that only an emerald magistrate could stop you. If Okami threatened violence or was involved in some sort of dodging of the imperial taxes, the emerald magistrate could be involved, but if it' just dispute over a contract, the local magistrate would have jurisdiction."

Sensing that he was losing the audience, Yuji did not go for another question.

"But that is a taste of what a previous Test of the Mind was like. Some of it assessing that you understand basic aspects of bushido, etiquette and the like, partly a test of wit and attention to detail in speech, and another part assessing future aptitudes for matters such as law enforcement." he concluded. With that he let the ball of conversation open to the table. Clearly more questions were ready if one presented an interest, or perhaps the table would talk about something else entirely. Yuji did, after all, still need to Kakita-sama and Kitsu-san about their poetry.

"Ah." Urusai nods. "It is easy at times not to remember that that level of administration is in place in such cases."

"Seems that we have many things to learn and be aware off." Kuroneko replied "I look forward to this test too besides the poetry one."

Yuji brightened at the Shiba's comment.

"Ah yes, speaking of which, Kakita-sama, Kitsu-san, I haven't gotten a chance to yet tell you about this project I'm working on. I'm attempting to gather two poems from each of the competitors in this year's tournament. One of their initial impressions of Tsuma and the tournament, and one of their final impression. The journey from childhood's end to adulthood's beginning told from the point of view of many different people all representing the finest of their clans. Can I count on you to contribute to it?" he asked.

It was still Crab lands and Crab property. It had sounded like some kind of legal issue with no root in actual Rokugani way of life.

Before she could answer about a poem, Toshimoko demanded the attention of the room and she of course gave the main host all of her attention. At the conclusion of his speech, Ahiru bowed to the lord and focused back on the others at the table.

"Ah... right. A poem? I will have to ask Kakita-san to wait for it then. I would not want to make a poem now to reflect my journey to adulthood when much can still happen in the last days of that journey."

Toshimoko of course could have the attention of the room in an instant, no one would dare talk over him, not even the dullest student. But once the stone had been dropped into the water, the ripples of conversation soon resumed.

His fellow Kakita's request surprised Yuji quite a bit. An imminent Crane samurai who could not instantly capture the essence of a moment in a poem? Yuji took a moment to assess the situation before realizing the error. Clearly, Kakita-sama had misheard him. It was a loud feast hall after all. Perhaps she was hard of hearing? It wasn't unknown.

He offered her a polite smile.

"Hence the request for two poems, Kakita-sama. One to capture the beginning of your journey at the tournament, and one to reflect upon the end. I think it will really showcase the transformation best from child to adult." he said, repeating the request

Other clan's samurai he had a slight inkling about the reluctance to offer poetry, especially after Kaeru-san's earlier display, but Kakita Ahiru? No, clearly she had misheard him.

[Kakita Ahiru]

"Then I will politely decline for the first poem, Kakita-san," she said, inclining her head a touch as a gesture of apology. "I have been here in Tsuma many times and could not honestly offer you my initial impression of it, and I have been rather busy with other things today that I have not been able to get a good impression of all the many different competitors that have come, with the exception of the fine samurai at this table."

"Any poem I could compose of such an event as today would lack substance worthy of your project."

[Kakita Yuji]

Yuji was clearly disappointed with his fellow Kakita's response, but accepted the decline.

"Of course, Kakita-sama. Art can only be inspired, never compelled." he said. "If you find your inspiration later, be sure to let me know, I would be honored to included your works along with every one elses."

Having already received poetry from the Phoenix and the Seppun that left.....the Lion at the table.

"What about you, Kitsu-san? Would you contribute your talents to this project?" he said, turning his attention on the Lion.

It'd be a minor coup for the Lion if they performed where Ahiru did not, but Yuji was more interested in getting the project as complete as possible than such social brownie points.
