"When a captain gets a ship, do they rename it? Or does it get its name and keep it when it is built?"

[Yukikaze no Kasumi]

"Oh, changin' a ship's name's bad luck! Insults the spirit'a th' thing. They're named when they launch, an' it's a rare cap'n who'd even think'a changin' it..."

[Shiba Jiro]

"I see. So you likely would only get to name a ship if you were asked to by the person that had it built? Or would it be it's first captain?"

[Yukikaze no Kasumi]

"Usually whoever owns a ship picks th'name, an' that's usually not th'skipper- 'specially among samurai. Our ships belong to th'Mantis Clan. S'abit like bein' assigned a castle."

[Shiba Jiro]

"So the clan names them cause they own them? Then it's the person that the captains answer to that gets to pick names I guess?"

[Yukikaze no Kasumi]

"More're less. Sometimes y'get a personal craft, but seldom anything s'big as a kobune."

[Shiba Jiro]

"Well, that's a lot less fun than I had hoped. I thought you might get to name your own ship."

[Yukikaze no Kasumi]

"Not a good idea t'let skippers name 'em."

She chuckled.

"Too much fightin' over prime names. 'oh, but I was gonna name MY ship 'Fury of Osano-Wo!' 'No, me!' "No, I was gonna!'"

[Shiba Jiro]

"Ha! I could see that being a problem. So I guess there's a big list of ship names and they have to clear and have them recorded before actually naming? To avoid confusion probably?"

[Yukikaze no Kasumi]

"Aye, an' y'try not t'have too many that sound too alike, either. 'Cause sometimes, y'need t'get a fleet together and that's confusin' enough..."

[Shiba Jiro]

"Are there a lot of common themes in the names? Are they named for ancestors or famous Mantis?"

[Yukikaze no Kasumi]

"It kinda depends?"

She chuckled.

"Mom Skippers Kaga. Hirame-san rides in Funegao. I've been aboard Yukikaze. I sometimes think they just pick names out of a kabuto..."

[Shiba Jiro]

"Huh. So, Yukikaze isn't some famous mantis from the past? Maybe someday there will be a ship called the Gyohime."

[Yukikaze no Kasumi]

"Wouldn' that be somethin'?"

She grinned.

"Probably handle badly, fly too fast, an' run aground all th'time."

[Shiba Jiro]

"But it'd have beautiful lines and curves, command the attention of anyone nearby, and be tough enough to handle any situation."

He smiles playfully at that.

[Yukikaze no Kasumi]

"An' it's cargo would always be a bit messy."

[Shiba Jiro]

"Isn't that true for most?" he asks. "But that just makes it interesting to try and figure out what's going on in the hold."

[Yukikaze no Kasumi]

"Oh, some are quite ship-shape, an' a good dockmaster an' quartermaster can make things neat as y'please."

She winked.

"Never know how it might go."

[Shiba Jiro]

"That is true," he said smiling back. "Not knowing is a blessing, I think. Mystery and exploration are pretty great."

[Yukikaze no Kasumi]

"They cetainly have their moments. An' th'thrill of discov'ry is a real one."
