Game of Letters:
Addressed to Kakita Yuji but available to be seen as the others were.
The series of five poems are bound clumsily with a cord spiral whipped down one side of the stack.
On plain paper, undyed and unbleached to remain a rustic off-white
On thin, pale, green paperEarth
Persimmon pu-erh
Spirits untended and void
Meeting the future
Children in their finery
Yams, leaves, earth, all sparrow tossed
On bright, turquiose-blue paperAir
Light green jasmine breathes
Inflating a paper star
Meeting one’s future
Koi and tea, spring and hailstones
Bearing toy swords and great dreams
On clear orange paperWater
Water petal tea
Fresh paint and mended carvings
Future paint children
Shaken trusts to begin anew
Seeds eaten, laughter doubled
This paper is a deep, charcoal grey. The poem is written within a space that has been painted with bright, goldenrod lacquer, making this page stiff.Fire
Smokey mango oolong
Spirits awakening now
The Future here, now
A Pride of Lion, one Small Bird
Heaven’s Son alight, inspired
Void
Lavender, yuzu
Roasted oolong, violet
Futures seen in soft words,
Hard truths, success, and failure
Honors for a golden Lion
