The Year is 1123, the twentieth year of the glorious Son of Heaven, Hantei XXXVIII's rule. It has been a time of peace, though trouble has been brewing.
The Lands of the Crane have been ravaged by a tsunami only a few years ago, and they have lost capital and influence within the Imperial Court. Worst still, their Champion, the former Emerald Champion, has died, leaving many questions asked, and the future in question.
The Scorpion have risen to be the most politically powerful clan in the Empire, with their Champion, a personal friend of the Emperor, and his wife the Imperial Advisor, stationed in Otosan Uchi.
The Lion are restless, pressing their advantage at Toshi Ranbo, as well as fending off a surprise attack by the Unicorn the year prior. Some say the drums of War are beating loudly. On top of this, Akodo Toturi has been named the new Emerald Champion, and been pulled from their lands...
The Dragon, quiet and mysterious as ever, maintain their mountain vigil, and rumors persist that they are adopting peasant children to the rank of Samurai. What tidings does this bring?
At the Wall, the Crab stand ever vigilant against the forces of Jigoku. Yet rumors speak of attacks by the Shadowlands growing bolder, and more terrifyingly, more organized.
The Unicorn have been forced by Imperial decree to divulge the secrets of their foreign magic to the Seppun, in order to be allowed to continue their traditions. Was their attack on the Lion justified? Or has the blood spilled spoken their doom?
The Phoenix warn the Empire that there is a great imbalance in the elements. Where is the Master of Void? What is stirring with the Kami?
As if the Crane don't have enough problems, the Mantis have intensified their raids, bolstered by the smashing success of Yoritomo at the Winter Court of 1122 in navigating his niece into the Imperial Court. Do these brash sailors dare threaten to rise to the level of a Great Clan?
Even with all this turmoil, Rokugan is a land of tradition. And as such, as Spring banishes the winter chill, it is time for Amaterasu to shine her light on a famed city in the heart of the Crane lands. A new generation of Samurai have been invited to Tsuma. More invitations than ever have been sent out at great expense by the Crane.
It is time, for the Topaz Championship. And not only is the famed title up for grabs, by Imperial Decree, there is a secondary prize.
The Clan who sends the winning Samurai will earn the honor of hosting his Imperial Highness' Winter Court of 1123.
Destiny awaits...
