Paragon of Courtesy and Compassion would apply as Advantages

Passion: Tea, would apply as an Advantage

Passion: Rumors, would apply as an Advantage

A few questions on the Test of the Soul!

1) As we'd talked about, Aya's Failure anxiety should apply since she failed all rolls on D4. Would it only trigger if using a Fire approach, though? Like... if I only use a Fire approach on the third roll, the extra strain and the VP gain would only happen after the third roll? Or do the Passions not necessarily have to be tied to a specific approach?

2) Also! I'm assuming Aya's 'wordplay' passion might come into play here? If so, same question above - does it only trigger if using an Air approach? And if not - could it possibly trigger at the same time as the Anxiety? (I guess that would even things out... not sure if that's desirable in terms of rules).

3) Also - probably not the best idea for Aya, but would the Traditional Adherent distinction apply here?

Thanks! :)
1.) Correct. I'm not decoupling Advantages/Disadvantages from Rings this game.

2.) Same as above.

3.) It would.

is rumors different from gossip? and if so what is the timing on taking strife from rolling in the event vs clearing strife from passions? like if you gain strife from roll 1 and 2 could you clear before roll 3?

Gossip applies. I likely put the wrong thing.

So your passion clears on the roll it would apply. So yeah, you could clear before step 3.

How about the Subtle Observer Distinction for step 2 (the sentiment one)? I can see a case for yes or no.

Would Well-Connected apply for Step 2?
Step Two: "As you converse, one must be charming. You will be counted on by your Clans to develop positive feelings for yourself in others, so that friendships can be established, and thus the great game of Court works as it should..."

This is a TN 2 Sentiment check, as a Support or Scheme Action. Carrying on the conversation with Doji Shingo, this roll represents developing a rapport with them.
Well Connected [Water] (Emerald Empire)
  • You have a number of influential connections among the courts and leadership of Rokugan, whose names you can subtly invoke to establish
    your own importance.
  • When performing a check for which your connections are a benefit (such as a Courtesy [Water] check to impress someone at court or a Government [Water] check to identify a useful contact among the local aristocracy), you may reroll up to two dice.

Same question for Support for step 2?
Support of the Kakita Dueling Academy (water)

When performing a check to interact with the members of the chosen group that relies on your rapport (such as a Command [Water] check to issue them orders or a Performance [Water] check to cause an audience of them to desire something), you may reroll up to two dice.

I'll say no. The Curse is more for trying to woo

Sorry to burn gm bandwidth on clarification, but I'd rather ask than make a wrong assumption. Benten's applies to which of the rolls? Because step one makes sense....but I can also see step 3 working as well, since it's the right skill. And then if we're going with "What makes sense" I can see step 2 taking it as well, since it could be easier to develop a rapport with someone for those blessed by Benten.

Ah, I guess I should ask if passion for poetry applies on the third step as well, assuming I don't decide to suddenly whip out a bonsai set instead of indulging in my preferred art form.

I would say Step One for sure. Step 2... yeah, I can see it, though Sentiment is more the character reading the situation to guide the conversation along to develop the rapport (it's social investigation), so I'm inclined to say no.

Passion for [Art Form] can apply to step 3, but Poetry is more Composition or Performance. Though it could be the form of the calligraphy 🤔. I'll allow it.

Can Famously Successful be applied on the Aesthetics roll, assuming Fire approach? Presuming that in presenting her work, Mitsuko would describe how it represents her, and the distinction says, in pertinent part:
When performing a check for which you need to leverage your reputation for efficiency (such as a Courtesy [Fire] check to convince your lord to give you a position or a Tactics [Fire] check to get enemy troops to withdraw in the face of a show of force), you may reroll up to two dice.
