[LM2] - Test of the Waves - The Winter's Wind
Posted: Wed Nov 03, 2021 8:05 pm
by Ender
The Winter's Wind has taken aboard all the candidates of the Topaz Championship. Sailing out towards the sea for a morning cruise, it is a lively ship. Shou, the Captain and Judge for this event, swings down from the top of one of the sails, holding onto a rope as he dramatically arrives in front of all the contenders.
"Well, well, well, this is the crew for the day, hmmm? World's changin', contenders. And you've gotta show how you can adapt. We Mantis, we sail across the sea, and meet all kinds of people, and bring things back to our shores. So... let's see what you're sea legs are like!" He's flashy, and full of vigor in his words and deeds. Decisive, outspoken even. "Do you have the intensity to make the best of this!?"
Disadvantages that must be triggered once on a roll of the affected PCs choice: Whisper's of Poverty [Water] (must be on the commerce roll), Accustomed to Luxury [Earth], Ebisu's Curse [Earth], Daikoku's Curse [Water] (must be on the commerce roll), Maimed (Any) (on the seafaring roll) Muteness (Air) (on government roll)
Magic is not allowed for this event
Scoring:
1 Wave Point for a Basic Success
+1 Wave Point for every 2 successes after the first,
+1 Wave Point for using Shou of the Winter Wind's favored approach, if successful on the roll.
Tiebreaker 1 - Opportunity on Kept Dice
Tiebreaker 2 - Strife on kept dice (whoever has the last amount of strife kept)
1st Place - 3 Topaz Points, 3 Glory
2nd Place - 2 Topaz Points, 2 Glory
3rd Place - 1 Topaz Point, 1 Glory
Step One: "Hoist the Colors!"
- Each candidate must show they can operate as part of a ships crew, and work their way around a kobune. This is a TN 2 Seafaring check. This counts as a Support Action for the purposes of techniques.
Step Two: "Distant Shores to the Markets at home"
- You've brought back a fresh shipment to the docks. It's time to see what value you can get for the goods. This is a TN 2 Commerce Check. This counts as a Scheme Action for the purposes of techniques.
Step Three: "Customs check."
- Even when you've gotten the best value for your goods, one still has to navigate the bureacratic process to make sure all the goods are legal. This is a TN 2 Government Check. This counts as a Scheme action for the purposes of techniques.

To say Kasumi was pleasantly surprised was putting things mildly.
And she thrilled at the chance to be aboard a ship again.
Of course, none of it really fussed her much, and she happily traded sailor slang with the crew on hand.

by Kakita Yuji
Kakita Yuji listened to the captain's description of the challenge with a serious face when he came to a sudden realization.
He had....literally no idea how to do any of these tasks. Knotwork? Haggling? Customs checks? These were practically gaijin words to him. Ships had two purposes in Yuji's mind. To look dramatic upon the water and take you to pretty sights of the ocean for poetry. Actual work? What was this, Sparrow lands?
Still a samurai followed his lord's orders, and so he would put himself into the task. The captain wanted intensity? Yuji would give him intensity. None would question his intensity, just as none would ever want him working on a boat.
He strode up to a series of rope that needed tying together. He lashed them together in a lovely arrangement that called to mind the ties of family and friends against the weight of Duty. And while a beautiful metaphor, Duty was quite heavy and the bonds gave way easily, which was not really what you wanted on a boat.
0/0/0, Fire
Bold!
Next Yuji snatched up the bill of goods to take up the negotiations! With barely a glance he made several swift and decisive marks on the page outlined the terms of the deal. He handed it back over without a glance striding off to the next part of the challenge.
Upon review the terms of the deal were.....surprisingly balanced. They weren't going to line the captain's pockets, but the basics of trade were upheld.
2 Sux, 0 opp, 1 strife, Fire
Daring!
Finally came the task of working through the bureaucratic process of bringing the goods to port. Rather than dazzle them with his mastery of the law, Yuji struck up conversation with the bureaucrat who was also a big fan of poetry. After a few exchanges, it wasn't too hard to have the bureaucrat help him with some of the stickier legal points. It was not the Way of the Mantis, but the Way of the Crane after all.
3 Sux, 1 opp, 2 Strife. Opp to cancel 1 strife
Innovative!
At the end of it all, Yuji was pleasantly surprised with his performance. It was in no danger of placing, of course, but he had met the tasks with intensity and shown he could handle some truly odd requests from a demanding lord.
Total Score: 2 wave points (4 if Fire is preferred), 1 opp, 3 strife.

by Isawa Natsuko
Natsuko was entirely bewildered by pretty much everything asked of her for this test, and seasick to boot. The constant wind blew her hood back, exposing the drained pallor of her skin as she struggled to haul on ropes one-handed. If she hadn't already lost her breakfast on the outward bound journey, she'd have done so then for sure. As it was, she didn't dare open her mouth to join the cheery, but mystifying sea chanty when she could still taste that foulness.
The various goods being 'shipped' were quite nice and all, but...she had no opinion on their worth at all. Staring blankly with nausea-dimmed eyes, she offered responses more poetic than practical. The silk 'sounded like a thousand mouths chewing," and the strange lenses felt like 'sand boiling itself clear.' Explaining to customs officials that it was ridiculous to tax sand received some very odd looks, but no points. Though at least one sailor seemed very interested in the unique argument...and possibly had the charisma Natsuko lacked that meant he might actually pul it off.

by Shosuro Kaoru
...
There was clearly some sort of deal going on between the Mantis and the Crane. This was
very unlikely to be a traditional Topaz trial from the dawn of the empire.
A possibke, but requiring further investigation for confirmation, explanation was that the Mantis had offered material support to the Crane during its time of need, and the Crane was paying it back in political capital. In that case, granting a samurai's legitimacy to skills more often associated with common people.
As always, Kaoru adapted to the situation without ever breaking her
on. She didn't have the theoretical and practical knowledge required to shine here, but, though mimicry, she could blend into the crowd so her failings didn't stand out much.
You cannot always win. But you should always save face.

This is totally not within Jiro's skill set much like the day before. The difference being that this is far more stressful. He surprisingly did not do so bad as part of the crew, relying on instinct. Even more surprising was the fact that despite never being very lucky or skilled with money, Daikoku's best efforts to work against him had no real effect. But perhaps riding high from his perceived good luck, he got a bit sloppy and... well, it wasn't hard for the test administrator to sneak an "illegal" object past him. Embarrassing.

Kaori was feeling unsure about this whole thing. Since when was seafaring a Crane and Topaz thing?
Whatever, she was here to DO WELL.
She slowly climbed up to rig the sails...at least that is what she did. Hopefully. She only saw boats from afar. And on the river.
Next up, it was time to sell her stuff! The stuff was vague. And in a bag. And was it...meowing? Nevermind. A city girl born and raised, in the great city of RICH FROG, she knew how to haggle without haggling.
Finally, it came to the inspection by HIS MAJESTY'S GOVERNMENT. "No sama, if you would check the regulation from the Era of August Auspices, it clearly say that a tabby is not a cat, but instead a cursed spirit from Sakkakur. In all cases. And selling cursed spirits of Sakkaku does not fall under that regulation, nor any other one. A mischievous creature of Sakkaku? Sure. But this one is cursed!"

by Seppun Urusai
This was not covered in the curriculum, Urusai thinks as he centers himself deeply in the training he
has had, reaching out to the stillness within for clarity and peace.
If the Legions sail, I must yet be ready.
The stillness serves him well in working the deck; at a minimum, he is in good position, not in anyone's way, and does decently pulling on the lines. But the...gaps...in the Seppun teaching leave him nonplussed in assessing monetary value; truly, it's not something he's ever had to consider in his still-short life. And he has been trained to follow orders, rather than in the laws, so when it comes time to determine what is licit...he is lacking.
He hears a voice say
If you'd only listened to my story that autumn day on the shore, you'd've done better, even though no lips speak the words.

by Asahina Sakura
Sakura did not know her way around a kobune, that much was obvious to any who looked at the little Crane, who seemed horribly lost.
However, once the wares and goods were revealed, she took to looking them over carefully.
There's value here, look closely, a voice whispered from behind her shoulder, causing small hairs on the back of her neck to rise that had nothing to do with the cold wind whipping from the waters.
What do you know of the value of these goods? she retorted silently.
More than you, and you'd do best to listen, the voice said cooly, and Sakura did listen, repeating what her ex told her to much success.
Ensuring the goods were legalized caused no trouble, it seemed shadowing Tenshin in his navigation of government procedures had maybe worn off on her, just enough to warrant the required stamps of approval and win a few nods.

by Akodo Michi
It promised to be a long day. Michi did not like this challenge, in the slightest. However, she would not be defeated by it. She would be an Akodo, and show her pride and strengths. She would also feel no remorse over failing to make a profitable deal.
In fact, she was quite happy, somewhere deep inside, that though she saw much opportunity, she did not give into the temptation.
By the end, she was unaffected by her journey save some fatigue from the constant pitch of the boat, and the incessant chirping of the sailors. She did, however, note a moment that made her smile, but only to herself. And that was seeing Yukikaze no Kasumi in her element. The Lion could ignore the slang and other uncouth things, for the Mantis seemed to be at great ease there.
So despite disliking it a the beginning, she found the sea a proper place, at least in such calm waters and weather.
The rest was easy, simple form filling and proper etiquette, following regulations. Michi was an expert on that, having well studied requisition processes and forms needed to keep field units supplied.

When I said I wished to spend time on a ship this was not what I was asking for.
Having never been aboard a ship before, she does not do well, but by the time she has an idea of what she can do to help, they are already back in port. At least she felt she learned something,
even if she did not do well at the task.
Success: 0 (required: 2) Opportunity: 1 Strife: 1
Spend Opportunity to Remove Strife.
Now, trading, this she understands something about. Though the merchants here are a bit ruder than the ones she had dealt with at home.
She feels she got a good price even if she felt flustered at the end.
Success: 2 (required: 2) Opportunity: 0 Strife: 2
And enduring bureaucracy, that she knew too.
She managed with a minimum of strain, but still some of that, she could think of a dozen ways to make this procedure more efficient. She did have a productive chat with one of the clerks who used to be a sailor.
Success: 3 (required: 2) Opportunity: 2 Strife: 3
Spend 1 Opportunity to reduce Strife, Spend 1 to learn where she could find information on how crewing a ship works.
Overall, she ended with a slight headache but not feeling that she had done a bad job.
Final Strife +4

by Kakita Ahiru
It was horrid to think that if she was going to marry into the Mantis,
this was what her daily life could be like.
Ahiru shuddered and tried to push that thought from her mind, but it impacted her ability to adapt to the life aboard a ship. So much shouting and screaming and undignified running!
As for the gauche task of dealing directly in commerce, it seemed some vicious rumors were hampering her efforts, and she didn't have much luck.
But when it came to something like bureaucracy, red tape, rules, and regulations, Ahiru was in her element. "What do you mean that the tax rate for rice is that high? This does not at all correspond with Imperial standards that the Crane follow, as every clan should follow. As a merchant it is your duty to be up to date on the Imperial edicts regarding costs of such goods. Now let me speak to your superior so we can correct this..."

by Funegao no Hirame
Intensity! Well! That certainly wouldn't be a problem for Hirame.
He threw himself into the ship's tasks with enthusiasm and a bold smile. His hair whipped in the wind and spray, his eyes glinted in the sunlight. And so did his sharkskin jacket. He couldn't quite match Yoritomo in looks and manner, but it was pretty clear that's the model that Hirame had in mind with his mannerisms. And who knows? Perhaps he came close in drive.
Selling the goods was likewise approached with drive and energy. Hirame knew the market, he knew how to trade. He wasn't bothered by discussion of money. Nothing could put him off his came. Nothing could keep him from pressing for a better deal. And so he continued to press, eyes bright and lips smiling, until he got the best deal he could.
Government workings, on the other hand, was something Hirame didn't know much about. Was this a part of buying and selling? In his experience, Mantis usually skipped this part...
But he was on a roll. With an enthusiasm grown from his previous successes, Hirame carried on, pressing the government agent just as he had the merchant, and with as much success. With a satisfying series of thumps, his forms were stamped, and Hirame was through!

Being part of a crew? Definitely not one of Asako's strongest suits. Though she worked perfectly well with her dearest twin sister, she struggled to be in sync with anybody else. Surely it wasn't her fault either.
When it came to prices, she used the strategy she'd used all her life: being extremely forceful and demanding. At the very least, it seemed that she was able to even secure the goods.
Why do I have to check if this stuff is legal? They wouldn't be so stupid to bring illicit goods during this tournament, right? Then again, it is the Mantis. At the start, she did her best to look into all of the details of the laws. But that was so boring, really, so she gave up and declared that everything was fine.

by Ikoma Aya
Aya certainly didn't expect
this test. She... wasn't sure what to think of it either. But that didn't mean she wouldn't try her best. She focused on the 'intense' aura projected by Shou, and put herself to work on the Winter Wind to the best of her ability - which is to say... at least well enough to pass as a decently able hand aboard.
Now negotiating and haggling for the value of goods? She had no idea what she should be doing there. In fact... she wasn't even quite convinced
that she should be doing something like that. Maybe, if needed... one must be ready for anything, Akodo-sensei said, right? But... did that apply to somethign like that? She wasn't sure... and uncertainty certainly wasn't conducive to negotiating the value of anything!
The last part of the test was... less uncomfortable, in many ways. But that didn't mean it was easier. She had little to no experience with such bureaucratic dealings - and she had never even considered having to deal with that, given what she expected for her future. But being ready for anything meant being ready for that sort of thing too, apparently... something else to learn for the future.
Which is another way to say she felt very much like a fish out of the water.
eh... but we *are* in the water... so maybe a Lion in the water is a better way to put it? Or... a cat in the water! But... wait... I'm not a cat... so maybe...
It isn't hard to predict how well the bureucratic dealings went when that's what was crossing her mind while she tried to navigate it.

Rin was not unfamiliar with a boat. Many a spring had found her, in her childish days, venturing to the capital and back by boat. She was entirely unfamiliar with rigging and steering and navigation. Still, though she could not bring herself to match Shou's enthusiasm, she, in her own quiet way, proved herself more able than most with a rope ladder.
With money, she was of course useless. Those with it, or in her case, those who were well-entwined with those with it, seldom really counted it a consideration. But when the time came to navigate the customs office, there were few that could match her quiet command of the nuance in the regs, earning her cargo a tax reduction that rather neatly made up for how badly she was gouged on the initial value.

by Suzume Rin
Rin hums happily as various Mantis officers scream orders at her.
"Not that rope,
that rope!"
She holds up one rope quizzically
"No, on the port side!"
With a confused look she hurries to the other side of the ship and grabs a rope
"No no! You pull that and you're gonna reef us! The other rope!"
Rin finally grabs the rope and pulls it, glad it seemed to stop all the shouting at her.

When it came to the commerce though, Rin had a cunning idea.
"Shou-sama! I've finished the inventory!"
The Mantis bounds over
"And what, Sparrow-san, do you think is the correct answer?"
Squaring up and looking him dead in the eye.
"Get a merchant to do this because it would be dishonourable to haggle like a peasant and I also have no idea what a banana costs."

The Mantis can only sigh.
When it comes to the customs exercise Rin finds herself without any ideas, not a single one. Let's see...were there any good stories about samurai...heroically evading import duties? None came to mind.
"Maybe we should just honestly report what we have?"
The Sparrows looks around as all the sailors facepalm

by Shinjo Jingyi
Being on the water was a rare experience for the Shinjo and one that made her nervous, as she eyed the barrels of freshly caught fish. She set herself to performing the tasks she was assigned, however, without issue. She didn't stand out, but she was adequate. The same could not be said for her judgement regarding the worth of the cargo. She absently scratched at her skin as she inspected the fish. But, without actually handling any of them, she couldn't offer a good assessment. The rest was simple enough. She was no Ide, but she had watched enough merchants to know when to nod and when to speak up.
