[EA8] - Art for the Temple, Balm For the Soul

Posted: Thu Dec 02, 2021 7:37 am
by Ender
With the efforts made by the Topaz Contestants earlier in the week, some of the locals have decided to put on an art show to help further furnish the Shrine, and honor all of the fortunes there. While every piece added will be counted, the Crane have put a decidely Doji spin on it, to showcase the skill of their artists.

Event Type: Competitive and Cooperative
Participation: Open to all

Each PC may attempt up to three rolls. The first roll is at TN 2. The second is at TN 3. The Third is at TN 4. 1 Momentum point is awarded for a basic success, with +1 Momentum Point for every 2 successes after that. These are all Support actions for the purposes of techniques.

Basic Success - 15 Momentum Points - The Shrine has new artwork, and will draw the attention of the Governor again.
Moderate Success - 20 Momentum Points - Word will get out that the Shrine of the Fortunes in Tsuma has become a beacon of Faith and Artwork. Crane artisans will begin sending regular offerings of art to the Shrine. Every one who participates, and passes at least 2 checks, will gain 3 glory.
Great Success - 30 Momentum Points - Not only the Shrine, but Tsuma itself, will be seeing the blessings of new patronage of the arts. The Shrine seems to have been favored by the spirits in and around Tsuma. What this means... is yet to be seen.

Normal opportunity spends may be used based on approach.

Stances do not apply.

Magic IS allowed for this event.

The following Disadvantages are triggered for one roll: Perfectionism (Water), Clumsiness (Fire), Meekness (Fire)

The Following Activities May be partaken in-

Sculpture - This is an [b[Aesthetics check[/b], using clay, to fashion beautiful sculptures for the shrine. These can be used in new altars, or just to be decorative.

Poetry - This is a Composition check. Preparing fine calligraphy and poetic words to adorn the shrine with wall scrolls. Penmanship is critical here, to most honor the shrine.

Wood Panel Painting - This is a Design check. Crafting beautiful landscapes on wood panels, either detailing folklore and myth, or scenes of beauty and tranquility.

Musical Demonstration - This is a Performance check. Using whatever musical talents you have, whether singing, or instrumentation. You offer up a song to the Shrine and those in attendance.

Sadane - This is a Games check. What would an Art contest be without the game of Sadane. Using veiled words to critique, politely, the other works put forth. This cannot be attempted at TN2.

On top of the Momentum Points goals, there will also be a "Tsuma Art Champion". This will be determined by Most Momentum Points generated by a character.

by Kakita Ahiru
After the horrid Test of Piety (in her personal opinion), Ahiru was more than glad to return to the shrine. Other duties had kept her too busy from visiting Saito and the shrine, but she felt she was helping from afar at least. So now at least she had a chance to be more active directly for him and the shrine.

She had a good idea for the wooden panels and how to enhance what had been there, adapting it to more current times to make it appeal more to visitors. And she was off to a good start, but the level of detailing was a bit too much for her to handle on her own...

by Seppun Urusai
Urusai, still shaking from the experience at the Temple to Amaterasu, makes his way to the Shrine where he has worked. Seeing the activities on offer, he takes up a brush and paper, and pens a poem:
Ten thousand watching
Pray in every word and deed
Welcome offering
The calligraphy is...gracious, clear, clean, and the poem itself echoes the fleeting vision of perfection Urusai had had before. But the strain is great, and his hands are shaking as he hands off the paper.

He tries again, and though his writing is less clear, it is still sound; the poem reads
Cherry blossoms fall
Rise again among bamboo
Thus the wheel proceeds
Urusai draws a deep breath and makes one more attempt. But this time, his hands jerk, and he tears the paper. For a time, he sits and stares at the ruined work, his hands shaking. At length, he breathes again.

"Please...please excuse me," he says, bowing and making a hasty retreat.

The events of the last days have been...too much. Too much.

Too much.

Ah, back to the temple! It was strange, but Hirame felt that he'd spent some of his more peaceful moments there. And if he'd found some inner peace, you know who definitely needed some inner peace? Kasumi! And so, before heading to the temple, he badgered her for a bit about it.

Regardless, the key thing was to put in an effort! It was all an opportunity to learn, even this. He cast Ahiru a smile as she gave him some tips on his brushwork. Maybe painting was something he should try to do more of...

As he worked, Hirame chatted with those around him. "Hey, c'mon, we're painting a temple, not a ship. Maybe you should join the Mantis?" He teased, but the good-natured way he did so, with a friendly smile and a nudge of the elbow, kept spirits high instead of dragging them low.

Some attempt was made at a poem, but it was no good. He left it there, only the first line written.

by Shosuro Kaoru
There are many forms of kagura, sacred dances to please the spirits. A lot however can only be rightfully performed by priests. Kaoru felt like she had spent more time double checking which one was both appropriate for the occasion and proper for a laywoman to execute than she actually spent learning the moves.

This was of course not factually true. However, the theatrics of the dance reminded her of her own theater lessons, a staple from her childhood in the Shosuro family, and the warm memories from home had carried her during the long practice sessions.

Her actual public performance was... adequate. Her mind registered all the small mistakes she had done but she was well-aware most of her mortal audience wouldn't, for lack of familiarity with the ideal form of the dance.

How merciful with these imperfections her immaterial audience would be, only them knew.

by Asahina Sakura
Having chosen to sculpt, Sakura took her lump of clay and set to work. Dipping her fingers into a bowl of water as needed, she set about first making an offering of a small statue for Benten-no-Kami, as thanks for her blessing. It turned into a beautiful piece, but Sakura saw flaw after flaw she couldn't seem to get right in her eye; but before she could over-perfect the statue to ruin, she decided to leave it alone to be placed on a new altar in the shrine.

The next two lumps of clay did not distress the Asahina to the same extent and while she was able to create small works that evoked a sense of spiritual peace, by the time she had finished tears of frustration brimmed in her eyes. She had poured everything she had into awaken and augment the spiritual resonance of them all. The pieces together were sound, but they were not perfect; certainly not extraordinary. She accomplished what was asked of her, true, but still... she was mentally and emotionally exhausted from the effort.

by Shiba Jiro
Who put this paneling in place? What kind of... no. This is part of your problem...

He starts attempting to paint a basic landscape depicting the forests outside Tsuma, and notices some very slightly raised and warped panels that change the shape of his image for the painting. His eye twitches.

It doesn't bother me... it doesn't bother me... it doesn't bother me... IT BOTHERS ME... IT BOTHERS ME SO MUCH!

His hand shaking a bit, he goes to find a white wash to coat over his work thus far and lets someone else use that panel.

In attempt to calm down he grabs his koto and moves to sit near Kaoru, a comfortable range outside of where she was going to perform her dance. Using her movements as a guide, he uses a common rhythm used in ceremonial music and adds flairs to embellish her movements where he can. It was an acceptable accompaniment by his estimation.

He wasn't exactly calmed from his earlier annoyance, but he was now more in control. He steps to the area where sculpting options are available. This was a difficult choice. It needed to mean something to him, but he wanted a statue that would be properly reverential and be appropriate for everyone in general. Thoughts drifted to his internal concerns from the past day... and he settled on something. In return for the apparent gift the day before Jiro made a nice depiction of Kisshoten, surrounded by children and smiling. He turned it over for judgement and placement in the temple where it was considered appropriate.

Despite Yuji's misgivings about the temple, an art contest was something he could not miss out upon. He took up the calligraphy brush and wrote out a poem,

"Leaves upon spring wind,
Chasing away Winter's depths.
Advancing Summer."

He was quite pleased by the effort when two of his friends from the academy's Sadane club showed up.

"Ah, Doji Heza, Daidoji Heza, are you here to help with the art?" he asked.

"In a way," said Doji Heza with a sly grin.

"We can't have just any old art in the shrine, right? Let's weed out some of the unworthy works." Daidoji Heza clarified.

"But it's temple art, given in aid by samurai across the Empire...."Yuji started.

"Are you saying it's without flaw?" Doji Heza retorted.

"Well, no but..." Yuji protested.

"So you're saying you're not smart enough to come up with something about such a subject." Daidoji Heza pressed.

Yuji glanced around eyes alighting on one offering in particular.

"Ah well, the gathered samurai are so pious, they're honoring even the most minor fortunes. Truly, the one this work is honoring is so minor, I don't know who it is." he offered, to the pair's delight.

"And?" Doji Heza asked, looking for more.

"...perhaps it is to honor the fortune of lost causes?"

It was a shame, Yuji had led with his best punch, and the follow up was weak, if only he had said the second thing first.

"Inner peace."

Right, Hirame.

This is just you seeking some form of payback, however small and pathetic...

But she could hardly deny she had it coming.

So she foot in the shrine for the second time since coming to Tsuma.

As usual, she didn't pray, as such. Wasn't her thing. The fucking Fortunes could fucking well look after their fucking selves.

But she did love to sing- and did so with a will.

She started with a fairly impassioned one about the winds and the waves, a stirring song about the power of Osano-Wo.

Then she shifted to something gentler but still rollicking, in its way.

Even if she ran of out, well... appropriate lyrics by the end, causing her to stumble a bit, she relished the chance to actualyl show off one of her talents that wasn't directly tied to shipboard life.

Performing . . . the Cat Clan's purpose . . . well public purpose at the very least. Seto should be good at this.

In short, he was.

A beautiful song offered up in praise of the Fortunes, combined with a ritualistic dance. Seto had learned this at the many shrines on Cat Island and it was just as appropriate here as it was at home. For the first time since arriving in Tsuma he felt . . . right.

Natsuko works on refining a student poem of hers into something that might grace the temple, sitting among some of the others as they try out rhythm and rhyme schemes and hunt for just the right imagery. In the end, she doesn't find the piece worthy, but her...unique...take on things may have sparked some interesting lines.

Sometimes, it helps to move, bring the mind and body better in tune with one another before digging into mental work. Natsuko joins those performing age old dances, dipping into the timeless flow of Void to recall...a very different interpretation than anyone here would recognize. There is a lot of spinning, which rather entrances her with the fluttering of her own sleeves. She remains entirely on time with the music however, stockinged feet offering a gentle percussion to the dance.

Winded, she settles once again with her poetry, setting her brush dancing, hoping the shapes might tease out some deeper, better meaning. Alas...

Still, it's uplifting to see everyone work on the restoration of the place. She settles to burn some incense for Sadahiko in hopes that the fortune will further inspire her fellows.

Again, a useful task to apply one's self to. And for a good cause as well. This made Taura very happy.

She looked over the available tasks and found one that suited her, she would repair and make new wooden panels in the same style, She was not a great artist but she could build off the work of others to provide a pleasant experience for those who visited the temple. And, besides, wood carving was just fun,

First, she organized her workspace, setting the needed tools close to hand and then she set to work. She remembered what the Asahina had been working at in the garden yesterday and tried to incorporate them along with the imagery of the Asahina making them. Working from the examples provided of the few existing panels to provide at least vague continuity. Her first panels are not as artistic as the previous ones, but they were much thicker and more solidly built.
Success: 3 (required: 2) Opportunity: 1 Strife: 1 Spend Opportunity to add the Durable Quality.

She set her first ones aside and moved on to new pieces of paneling, again, trying to continue the imagery of gardening Cranes, to the best of her ability in any case. It was tiring work, be she was happy to continue, being careful and pacing herself. It was successful . . . as a panel, as artwork, not as much. She sighed, well it could be used in the back area where no one would get a good look at it. If someone else wanted to take the panel they could probably improve them.
Success: 2 (required: 3) Opportunity: 2 Strife: 1 Spend it Opportunity to provide assistance to someone else try to work with the panels.

Well, at least she knew what not to do on the last set she would have time to work on today. At least, she hoped she did, She decided to focus on replicating her early work in a mirror image, as the design had worked so hopefully flipping the perspective would work as well. But there was just something about it just did not ring true, she simply had to face it, this was not her kind of art.
Success: 2 (required: 4) Opportunity: 2 Strife: 2

[Ack, totally forgot about Blessing of Ebisu! I should have done better but do not want to be that guy and go back and reroll all those rolls, I made the mistake and poor Taura must suffer.]

by Togashi Shinko
To hear that there was a festival of art happening at the temple would have been enough for Shinko. But the chance for her to sing? And for people to listen? That was too good to pass up. And she had something she had been practicing for a bit for something...special. She's dressed in her best robes as she practices a few notes.

She askes for a koto to begin warming up before starting to croon:

"Been travelin' in packs that I can't carry anymore
Been waitin' for somebody else to carry me
There's nothin' that's there for me at my door
All the people I know aren't who they used to be
And if I try to change my life one more day
There would be nobody else to save
And I can't change into a person I don't wanna be, so
Oh, it's a samurai's night, yeah

I pray for the wicked by the weeks end
Sister can I get another amen?
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, it's samurai's night, yeah
Swear to the gods, I'm gonna make them repent
Sister, can I get another amen?
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, it's a samurai's night, yeah"

Shinko pauses, looking down for a moment, and when she looks up the light in her eyes in undeniable.

"And every mornin' when I wake up
I wanna be who I couldn't say I'd ever been
But it's so much more than I ever was
If every night I go to sleep knowin'
That I gave everything that I had to give
Then it's all I could've asked for
I've been standing up beside everything I've ever said, but"

The thoughtful expression ends as she belt out the chorus. She should have been exhausted. She should have been passing out. But the eyes on her, and knowing the kind of performance she is putting out his landing spurs her onwards

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, it's samurai's night, yeah
Swear to the gods, I' gonna make them repent
Sister, can I get another amen?
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, it's a samurai's night, yeah
Swear to the gods, I'm gonna make them repent
Sister, can I get another amen?
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, it's a samurai's night, yeah"

Shinko is clearly having fun with it now, regardless of her performance, even as the toll on her begins to show.

"If I had one more day to wish
If I had one more day
To be better than I could have ever been
If I had one more day to wish
If I had one more day
I could be better, but, baby
Oh, it's a samurai's night, yeah!"

At the end of the performance, Shinko bows deeply to hide how winded she is, doing her best to make a graceful exit, followed by guzzling some sake and taking a break.

Art was in Ichiro's blood even if they had not put much time into exploring that facet of themself. But, still, the shrine needed assistance and it would not do to let it stand unaided. As such they closed their eyes and let the spirit, and the spirits, move their brush. In the end they were left with two abstract yet evocative paintings and one, sadly, that didn't quite work. The growing swell of the spirits had been too much for their novice talent to properly channel.

by Kitsu Masaru
Masaru was back again to help with the Temple and make sure the governor noticed it and realized it's value.

He started by designing some decorations to enhance the beauty of the building and bring glory to the spirits it was dedicated to.

Then he went about composing a song, something that would bring honor to the te.ple and also delight and entertain a crowd. Something light and fun that people could dance to. It was soothing work and the song came out well!

Then came the playing where Masaru reminded everyone what even a middling Bard can do with an instrument. The Lion boy played and whipped the crowd into a frenzy of dance and laughter all dedicated to the fortunes of the temple. It was likely one of his best performances to date.

Jingyi had very little understanding of art. That had become painfully clear. She hoped, perhaps, trying to help at the shrine might inspire some hidden talent she was unaware of. It did not.

Jun knows he wasn't very impressive in the Test of Piety this morning. One can't be brilliant at everything, anyway. When you haven't got genius or even much aptitude, the least you can do is offer sincere effort--that more or less sums up Jun's entire relationship with the Fortunes, Shinsei, his ancestors, and the whole set of numinous beings whose existence he doesn't really doubt, but who pretty much ignore him most of the time.

So, to make up for the morning, Jun joins the other Topaz candidates at the temple in the afternoon. While he's not an artist in any real sense, he has a sharp enough memory to produce a nice-looking copy of the paired couplet he'd studied so many times, as it hung on either side of a door in the Temple of Fukurokujin back home. Watching one of the Crab candidates at work, Jun picks up a few useful tips for working with the colored pigments on wood and paints an unexpectedly fine variation on the common Fortunist temple motif of a misty mountain landscape.

And also one more piece of calligraphy that... really doesn't work. Whoops. Jun frowns at the ruined sheet of formerly pristine mulberry paper. Maybe someone else can use it as a scratch pad, at least, and avoid a similar mistake on their actual good piece...
