[EA3] Honest Work for Honest Samurai
Posted: Mon Nov 15, 2021 6:08 am
by Ender
Word has been getting around that the Shrine to the Fortunes has seen better days. A recent uptick in donations has helped, and Saito has been able to hire some laborer to help tend to the grounds. But not enough hands still. There is much work to be done, and the hail certainly isn't making it any easier.
Event Type: Cooperative
Participation: Open to all
Goal:
15 Momentum Points - Mild Success - Saito thanks everyone who helps with their deeds. The shrine looks a bit tidier and organized.
20 Momentum Points - Moderate Success - Along with his thanks, everyone who helps is spoken fondly by the citizens of Tsuma, and earns 3 glory. The shrine truly seems to be coming back together
30 Momentum Points - Great Success - Through the power of friendship, the Shrine certainly seems to be a part of what it once was. While there is still much work to do to maintain the condition, it's off to a great start. In additional the rewards above, every one who participates gains the Distinction Ally [Saito] (Water) Advantage
Each PC may attempt up to three rolls. The first roll is at TN 2. The second is at TN 3. The Third is at TN 4. 1 Momentum point is awarded for a basic success, with +1 Momentum Point for every 2 successes after that. These are all Support actions for the purposes of techniques.
The Hail is in effect. Participating will have the participant suffer 1 Fatigue, as per the weather report
Magic IS allowed for this event.
The following Disadvantages are triggered for one roll: Disdain for Compassion (Water), Ebisu's Curse (Earth), Maimed (Any - Only on a check that would involve physical work), Momoku (Void), Whispers of Cruelty (Earth), Perfectionism (Water), Superstition (Void).
Skills that can be used in the project:
Aesthetics - helping beautify the altars that have been run down. Tending to the shrubbery that dots along the trim of the walkways.
Design - Tending to the tapestries within the shrine building itself, refurbishing clothing for the monk and others that may come to support him
Command - getting the laborers to work harder, or more efficiently.
Courtesy - petitioning the governors office for aid.
Theology - Making prayers to the kami for their support, showing that the shrine has not been forgotten.
Fitness - Physically moving debris, pushing a broom across the floor, helping clean
Commerce - buying and procuring the items needed to help get the shrine in good repair. Yasuki Merchant and Ide Trader tech reduces the TN by 1 (To a minimum of 1).
Labor - Doing Masonry, mosaic, weeding of the gardens.
You may use the same roll multiple times. However in doing so, you will take an amount of strife equal to number of times that skill was rolled minus one (i.e. the first time you make the skill roll, no strife. The second time you use that same skill, 1 strife. The third time, 2 strife.)

by Kakita Yuji
Kakita Yuji was mentally tired for the day's test, had a bad feeling about this project, was cold and sore from the hail and was somewhat daunted by the challenge they were being faced with.
But he'd be a ronin before he'd allow others to come to the aid of Tsuma without lifting a finger himself.
He decided to try to beautify the alters a bit. They were the last thing the petitioners to the shrine before communing with the fortunes, and the first thing when they opened their eyes. It would be nice if they weren't quite so shabby.
He nearly had the first bit repaired when suddenly a hidden spot of rot gave way, ruining the effort (Ebisu's Curse Triggered, turning success into failure and restoring a void point)
1 sux, 0 stife, 0 opps
Yuji frowned at the new hole, and reapplied himself to the task trying to correct this latest issue.
It felt almost as if the shrine itself was resisting his effort to correct the problem, but he would not be defeated by an inanimate object.
3 sux, 3 strife
Sweating, he had enough energy left for him for one more go.
3 sux, 2 opp, 3 strife
It just wasn't going to happen. It really felt like something did not want this shrine restored. Yuji just had to hope that others would similarly come to aid in the restoration project, because it was going to need far more help than he could provide.
1 momentum point granted by Yuji total.

by Isawa Natsuko
The hail was starting to get a bit tiresome for certain, even with her hood shielding her from the worst of it. But Natsuko was gratified to learn that work was being done on the shrine. She'd heard that Kuroneko had spoken of it before the court, and while rumors painted that as sparking a good deal of anger, perhaps it had also caused enough embarrassment to spur action.
First, there was so much to clean. Even more with workers tracking mud when they couldn't easily slip out of sandals while helping carry the heavy stone and wood needed to complete repairs. Unfortunately, Natsuko had little experience dealing with the movement of so many people while trying to clean. She spent far too much time getting one bit of floor spotless only to realize just how much more there was to clean. Her kin were already praying to sanctify the efforts and strengthen the spirits' ties to their home. She needed to leave the cleaning to others.
Finding her space before the shrine, she let her voice join with theirs, feeling the familiar connection of reaching into the void in concert, sensing the manipulations and working to bolster them, tweaking those strange interference points to awaken and bind the spirits that were touched and bounded by the void. It was tiring work, with distractions all around, leaving her shaking with the crackling pain that ran down her spine, settling in to creak and grate at her for the remainder of the day.

by Shiba Jiro
Jiro looks into the tapestries first, and soends a fair bit of time trying to figure out how he can transform them into something more fitting than the raggedy decorations they already are. But he gets nowhere with it... his mind swirling around too many possibilities and unable to bring himself to do anything with them in the end. So he ignores them and moves on.
Replacing the stonework, however, Jiro is quite capable with. In fact, he's so capable that he finds ways to smooth out and reshape old stone into a pattern that spells the word "blessing" on the last step of the path leading to the shrine. It actually reduces the amount of stone needed by recycling and improves the appearance while making the shrine more welcoming.
Finally, he similarly looks at some of the wood construction to identify if any is still solid, if a bit worn. He takes time to revitalize it by sanding down then carving stylized koans in patterns that should help those meditating or praying next to the shrine.
Not a bad days work. Though he does give the tapestries a glare before going to take cover from the hail.

by Seppun Urusai
Urusai's voice rings out, full of the commanding presence of the Seppun Family despite his youth, bidding those present work the more diligently and all the harder. It seems to be effective, although the pelting hail means it may not be heard as broadly as might be hoped.
But Urusai knows that the best way to lead is by example, and he leaps out into the hail, dodging it again and again, somehow, as he nimbly weaves in and out and around, grabbing debris and fairly tossing it to land in an extraordinarily neat pile. Soon, others add to that pile, leaving the leavings where they can be gathered up the more easily.
At length, though, Urusai falters, and though he laughs at it, the hailstone that strikes his forehead and leaves it red, raised, and bleeding seems to stagger him slightly. At Saito's encouragement, he comes under cover and attempts to give his prayers. His bell has been rung, however, and the echoes of it drown out his devotions.

by Shosuro Kaoru
Yesterday had required of Kaoru to be on the offensive, facing directly the local administrator in hope to get relevant information from the cracks of his facade.
Dancing so close to the flame two days in a row was however neither prudent nor likely to be productive. So today she would instead step back and do what she did best, what she was trained to do: Be a diligent and soft-spoken support for courtiers on the political frontline, offering softballs, approvals and distractions. Adapt and serve.

by Funegao no Hirame
Hail? Hail wasn't going to stop a Mantis! He'd had to work in pouring sleet, with thunder and lighting, and waves washing over the deck. He would work in a bit of hail!
The first thing was to get everyone working. "Hmmm!" Hirame said, frowning as he observed. "I wonder if we might get a sort of sweeping line going. Those at the front can sweep back to those behind, until it's swept out of the temple!" It was an interesting idea, but hard to implement, with the peasants' brooms getting tangled with each other. Well, no matter! There were no bad ideas, right?
Still, that did call attention to the state of the brooms some of the peasants had. A quick trip to the marketplace, a little application of temple funds, and they were quickly supplied with fresh brooms that weren't falling apart.
Finally, he returned to do sweeping himself. In truth, with all the people sweeping, Hirame's efforts didn't account for much. Still, it was a nice moment of togetherness, with everyone working together.

by Kakita Ahiru
Ahiru was more than happy to help the shrine further, especially the monk. Working alongside some of the others, she tried her hand at fixing up some of the old and worn down idols and statues, but... she might've been too distracted by looking at people instead.
Realising that actual physical work like this wasn't her strong suit, Ahiru put to work her management skills and connections instead. It probably also helped that she had already written to the governor's office about this, already giving her an in to the bureaucracy there as she began to speak with the right people. And also keeping in mind that they couldn't splurge with extravagance on a single shrine when much of the Crane territories still suffered from the tsunami not too long ago.
Exhausted and feeling pushed to the limit of how much red tape she could handle, Ahiru at least felt she had put in a good effort!

Kuroneko was glad that his efforts the previous day might had opened the eyes of the governor and allowed the prospects of the Topaz championship to aid. He was in a very friendly demeanor where he had asked with the guidance of Shosuro Kaoru for a bit more aid. This time he decided to pray to the kami to join the area and pleaded them to liven the place to help the monk that had taken care of this place to feel better.

by Yukikaze no Kasumi
Kasumi hadn't set foot in the building prior to today, and she rather doubted she'd ever be back.
The Fortunes, after all, could look after their damned selves, just like they made everyone else do.
But it was something to do, a chance to feel something like a storm, and anyway, the guy she liked who wasn't ever going to be more than the guy she liked had mentioned it, and that was that.
Posh manners and a little origami's all it takes then. Wonderful.
She wasn't much for the bureaucracy, and she wasn't a dab hand at prayer.
But she COULD haggle pretty effectively.
Her efforts to beautify the shrine were a bit less effective- mostly because she had so little idea of how a temple was supposed to look. Still, she found it somewhat relaxing.
Likewise, her simple brute force efforts didn't do much, but since she wasn't too invested in the project, she didn't take it too hard.

by Ikoma Aya
Aya dedicates herself to sweeping, cleaning and moving things around with a single-minded fury, as if by doing that she were trying to prove something to herself - or trying to avoid thinking about something else. One way or another, her intensity is quite productive - at least until she switches from physical chores to something else and tries to come up with a good way to weed and clean the gardens alongside the Mantis who had done so well in the Test of the Waves. Perhaps it was just a matter of the same sort of single-minded focus not working as well for that purpose... but well, it was one more hand at least. With some cleverer guidance, perhaps she could provide some more help there.

by Kitsu Masaru
The Kitsu boy had already been to the temple and saw the disrepair it had been in. A shame for a place devoted to fortunes, even ones people viewed as lesser, to not be taken care off.
Masaru showed up to work on the temple in a simpler and much sturdier kimono than anyone would have seen him in yet. He started off by by working around how the plants outside could best be arranged to look the best with the least effort.
That was slightly tiring work so the Lion decided to use his talents with diplomacy to petition the local government for help, he was clearly a very charming and well spoken young man. At one point his talks seemed to be faltering and something shifted in his eyes. His words were still charming and his smile still in place but there was an edge to it now something that seemed to unsettle the samurai he was speaking with enough to accept the request.
