[LM3] - Test of the Mind - KDA Library
Posted: Fri Nov 12, 2021 6:57 pm
by Ender
Isawa Kanbei has gathered the Topaz candidates within the library of the Kakita Dueling Academy. The analytical Isawa stands at a strict posture, looking down upon those gathered. Not with any disdain, but typical Isawa fashion. He bears the Mon of his family, as well as that of the Asako Scholars. A scroll case in his hand taps in a steady rhythm.
"Greetings, contenders. Here we will be giving the Test of the Mind. As samurai, not only must you keep your blade sharp, but also your intellect. You have full access to the library, and must deliver small treatises on the subjects asked. These are subjects near and dear to my heart, and I am very passionate about."
He cleared his throat, then looked to the small demonstration table.
"But first, you must build a model of the building I have described in the blueprints here." He pointed at the table, as well as the materials given. "Again, I will be a strict judge on your models. This is probably my favorite hobby. My standards are high and fierce. May the Fortunes favor you." He bows deeply, and moves to his judging position. He is flanked by Utaku Enktuya, last years champion, and Kakita Toshimoko. They exchange some quiet conversation, and a private joke.
Disadvantages that must be triggered once on a roll of the affected PCs choice: Impatience (Earth), Omen of Bad Luck (Water), Perfectionism (Water), Lackluster (Fire), Cognitive Lapses (Void), Fukurokujin's Curse (Fire),
Techniques that are applicable:
Kaiu Engineer School - Masterful Builder can apply to Step 1
Storm Fleet Sailor School - Apply to Step 1
Kitsuki Investigator School - Ktsuki's Method applies to Steps 2 and 3
Asako Loremaster School - Applies to steps 2 and 3
Please feel free to ask if your tech could apply
Magic is not allowed for this event
Scoring:
1 Mind Point for a Basic Success
+1 Mind Point for every 2 successes after the first,
+1 Mind Point for using Isawa Kanbei's favored approach, if successful on the roll.
Tiebreaker 1 - Opportunity on Kept Dice
Tiebreaker 2 - Strife on kept dice (whoever has the last amount of strife kept)
1st Place - 3 Topaz Points, 3 Glory
2nd Place - 2 Topaz Points, 2 Glory
3rd Place - 1 Topaz Point, 1 Glory
Step One: "I apologize for the crudeness of the model. It is not to scale."
- Each candidate must read the blueprint provided, and produce a model as dictated. This is a TN 2 Labor check. This counts as a Scheme Action for the purposes of techniques.
Step Two: "How to best aid those who are injured"
- Isawa Kanbei requires an essay on the best way to treat battlefield injuries. This is a TN 2 Medicine Check. This counts as a Support Action for the purposes of techniques.
Step Three: "What is the responsibility of the governing? What is the responsibility of the governed?"
- Now one must write a treatise, citing sources from the library, on how the administration of the Emerald Empire is handled. This is a TN 2 Government Check. This counts as a Scheme action for the purposes of techniques.

She tried to build a model.
And failed.
Well, shit!
She tried to come up with something about tending injuries.
And failed.
Fucking shit!
She tried to understand how to cite sources about a subject she barely understood in the slightest.
And failed.
Son of a grandmother's-corpse-raping, monkey-come-drinking whore-hopping pig-fucker!

Once more Ichiro was far from their element. Once more they managed to push through adequately... with some help from the Void... but they still doubted they would be on the leaders' list by the end of the day.

by Kakita Yuji
Yuji listened with interest at the instructions. He had never actually tried building a model building before, but he was certainly interested in the action of creation. What would they make a model of? Perhaps an intricate garden maze with a secluded teahouse nestled in it's center? Or what about a mountain palace standing majestically upon a sloped peak? He unrolled his copy of the blueprints to reveal.....A Crab standard warehouse.
Big box with a big door on it...and that was it. Sturdy, efficient...and utterly without any artistic merit whatsoever. Yuji stared blankly at the paper for a bit, before deciding, no, no he was not going to do a Crab standard warehouse. He was going to make something artistic! He had the materials, he just needed to creatively use them a bit! I mean, did it REALLY need that many support beams? Those could be put to such better use!
Yes. Yes it did need all those support beams. It was the most beautiful warehouse for the briefest transient moment...and then it collapsed in on itself rather impressively. Yuji tried to rebuild, but there simply wasn't time with the other tests awaiting.
0 sux, 2 opp, 0 strife
Running low on time, Yuji moved on to the next challenge which demanded an in-depth analysis of battlefield injuries. Yuji knew very little of that. People fell in battle, or they simply bore distinguished looking scars, at least that's how it went in the stories? (Impatience triggered, 3 strife and 1 void at the end of this roll.)
Yuji fought down the impulse to simply write down 'Take them to the healers and avenge them.', instead wringing every detail he could possibly remember out of the few talks there had been on the subject. He was clearly no healer, but he managed to not collapse impressively.
2 sux, 1 opp, 2 strife, opp used to cancel 1 strife
And then a second essay about good governance. Yuji at least saw how that one fit into the Test of the Mind. But really his reading tastes tended to more poetic, and less dry scholarly. Still, he'd read enough on the basics of good governance, he just wasn't really strong on the details:
"The ruler should esteem the five excellences and avoid the four evils. The five excellences are: plenitude without extravagance; taxation without exciting discontent; desire without covetousness; dignity without haughtiness; majesty without fierceness. The four evils to be avoided are: without instruction in the law, to inflict punishment - that is tyranny; without proper warning to expect perfect adherence - that is oppression; late in giving orders and expecting early obedience - that is robbery; to tax and to spend in a stingy manner - that is a misuse of government function."....
2 sux, 1 opp, 2 strife. 1 opp used to cancel strife,
Clearly, today was not the day that Yuji would climb onto the leaderboards. Still, he had given his all, and just had to shake his head in awe at the samurai who could master literally every skill in the book AND be master duelists.

2 Points (Earth.)

by Isawa Natsuko
There was a familiar unfamiliarity to the tasks. Why test them on ability to translate blueprints? 'Why not?' was generally the attitude she expected from instructors. So, Natsuko opened her mind to the patterns of the diagram, letting her hands do what her eyes saw without allowing her own thoughts to step in the way. It was...passable.
On the other hand, the problem with writing an essay on battlefield medicine in the time allotted was that there was so much, a flood of injuries and maladies that she could discuss. Letting instinct pull out the most interesting or important kinds of cases seemed to create a reasonable, if slightly disjointed essay.
But governance? Natsuko chewed nervously at the end of her brush at every pause in her writing. What was owed between those with greater and lesser power was a bit of a sore sport, honestly. But compartmentalizing, letting her mind find words that flowed together, and simply letting them roll onto the page seemed to work

Jiro started on the task of building the model first. And it took far longer than one would expect. He was meticulous precise, and he was a quarter of the way done with what would likely have been an amazing model if he actually had the time to do it his way. And then he sighed and gave up, moving on to the other steps in order to finish the test. He didn't do badly with the medicinal assignment, but got turned around on the government one, misidentifying the purpose of some offices.

by Seppun Urusai
Once again, Urusai finds himself confronted by unfamiliar tasks, and a voice says to him that he should have studied more, attended more closely. He nods to it, acknowledging the truth of the claim, and centers himself again in that stillness for which the Seppun are renowned, emptying himself as he can to touch the sublime and succeed.
It works on the blueprints, somehow. Something of the lessons in faith and fighting has centered on structures, and that certain something suggests itself to the Seppun youth. He bows, eyes somewhat unfocused as he reaches within himself, and he puts his hand to paper and brush to address the medicinal prompt. And, again, he finds success in his tasks--and perhaps that serial success distracts him with just a touch of hubris as he puts his hand to governance, a subject in which he actually
is trained. But here, he overreaches himself, making a claim and an extrapolation that the sources do not support.
Standing stiffly, he bows and withdraws to the side for the next competitor.

Kaoru's sharp senses caught a presence next to her. She raised her head from the blueprint she was attentively studying, all smile.
It was the judge. The clepsydra had run its course, it was time for her to deliver her model.
She hadn't even started building it. Oops.
She managed her time better for the rest of the event. Redacting papers on various subjects was something she was quite familiar with actually... But without more time to prepare the "jack of all trades master of none" aspect of her general knowledge was showing up prominently.

Building... a model? Sakura blanched under her make up and raucous laughter ephemeral erupted around her but she set to work. It could've been passable, but did not meet her impeccable stands and Sakura tore down her build... over and over and over until the time allotted had passed and she ended with nothing to show for her efforts except the destress on her features.
Then... a medicinal check, and here both the prompting of her haunting companion and her own wonder and interest in the topic spurred her on... And on and on and
on as she blew passed what was expected, writing her essay with increasingly scattered coherency but somehow it all came together; though it left the little Crane- who was not all there to begin with- most assuredly having stepping over the line blurring worlds, and overwhelmed by the spiritual activity in the library, unable to focus or even see the next task in front of her, that of using the library to write a treatise...
Sakura found herself lost in the stacks of the library, seeing between worlds and unable to find her way out.

by Funegao no Hirame
Looking at all of these things, Hirame found himself scratching his head. Kicking a ball, okay, he got that. Taking some goods in to the market, well, that was clear! But what was this strange collection of things? Well, he'd just do his best, as usual!
Assembling the model, with pieces not to scale... well, that required some flexibility! The important thing was that the model was put together, more or less how it was supposed to look. Examining the pieces he had, choosing the best ones, using what he had... these were all good Mantis skills, even if he wasn't much for this sort of work. In the end, he was able to assemble the thing ably enough.
Medicine... Hirame had no experience in medicine. Still, once again, he did his best. He knew that when you had a fever, you got hot. So how to cool them down? He spent a bit of time brainstorming, and then wrote down everything he could think of with a flurry of activity. The essay was a bit of a mess, but it had enough useful information to count.
Government, though... Hirame stared at the paper a long time before writing down two lines.
1) Be excellent to each other
2) Have a good time!
It wasn't what the Phoenix was looking for.

by Kakita Ahiru
Building? Uh, Ahiru knew this wasn't her strong point. She knew how to assemble flower arrangements, or how to place things just right in a home for proper feng shui that the spirits liked. But she didn't know much about building or architecture. She did her best to avoid causing any offense to the judge, but if she was lucky he would just forget about it.
Next up was questions about medicine. And Ahiru was growing frustrated that Hirame was performing better than her. Especially since he had
won yesterday's test. She tried to focus herself more on the healing and improvement of medicine rather than something revolutionary, and she thought of the things that made her feel calmer; like tea, and incense, and music, and the sound of rain outside... oh wait. Damnit! This wasn't quite what the judges were looking for.
I'm doomed.
Feeling pressed to do even better when the last go around came, she went into a long rant in her answer about how Bushido was the cornerstone in society - one couldn't rule without adhering to its tenets, and those governed could not meaningfully contribute to the community without also adhering to it. She extolled particularly the virtue of Courage, as true leaders needed to be fearless and courageous to do what must be done even if it might be recieved poorly by those who cannot see the full picture. A leader without courage was like a tiger without its teeth or claws.

"Hmmm... this goes here." Jingyi used a piece to subtly scratch along her forearm before setting it in place. "And, then this, nnmm... goes here..."
In the end, it came together well, but she still itched.
The medical essay should have been a bit easier for her to handle, but she continued to be distracted by the itching which was spreading. By the time, she wrote the treatise on governing, subtlety was gone and the redness of her skin was apparent. Jingyi turned in her work and quickly exited the library.

While Chiaki was not really trained in any of these topics, again, she tried her best. At first her model was not very good, in fact she had misread the blueprints and failed to produce the request by the same specifications.
Moving on to the second task, about medicine and battle injuries, she did quite a good job, just by analizing the data that she recalled from her past experiences, though she never had been on a field of battle herself.
As for the third request, although she didn't make an extraordinary job at synthetizing all the resposabilities of the government of the Emerald Empire, she had some recollection of past experiences dealing with courtiers and bureaucrats, due to her situation as a ronin, and she made an adecuate thesis and summary of those that helped her in passing this third request.

Kaori woke up with new energy!
Well, that didn't last.
Well, the first exercise was...a bit strange, but of course, as lover of her home city, she quickly came up with a solution.
"This here is a model of our Temple to the River Fortunes in the City of Rich Frog!"
Predictebly, it had some frog imagery, but it was a reasonable replica.
Next up were some essays. Writing! She can do that. Well, she knows her letters. At least?
As she started writing about battlefield injuries, her stomach started cramping. Ugh..wait. Did she? Yeah, in her hurry, she ate some of the fish that morning. She tried to ignore it, but somehow, her suggestion for battlefield injuries was the radial new solution of...some light, calming tea. Because people whose arms were just hacked off needed some tea
Lastly was her treatise. She pondered for a bit....and then started writing what she thought was best.
Strangely it all ended with "Just as we do in the City of Rich Frog."
Apparently it wasn't as impressive as she thought.
Maybe the drawing of the frog at the end was overdoing it.

His stroke of creativity was one that almost didn't come for he started to build the crude model for an instant his mind wandered off yet he could see the beauty of what the nice place could be built. As for the medical treatment he would make the argument that many priests and monks had medical training and might be best to make instead of a big hospital many small tents that where divided by injury and ailment. It was logical and probably for the best that they could be in a alliance between the lord and the people can be mutually beneficial, the workers and the people need all the support they can get.

Now a treatise on government, well, that would be easy.
"The only proper purpose of a government is to protect samurai rights, which means: to protect them from physical violence. A proper government is only a lawman, acting as an agent of the samurai's self-defense, and, as such, may resort to force only against those who start the use of force."

The withering look Isawa-sama gives her as he grades the treatise will haunt Rin for weeks to come.

by Kitsu Masaru
The Kotsu boy showed up to the library doing his best not appear as bored as he felt. It wasn't that Masaru had anything against reading or books but spending his afternoon being quizzed wasn't his idea of a good time. But he was here to prove himself not to have fun so hos smile was in place and he was attentive as the trial was explained.
With the first task he had no idea how to build a scale model but he looked around and saw one that was easy enough to copy.
When it came to medicine Masaru was lucky he held the book up the right way he managed to wrote an essay that used the right words but otherwise was utter nonsense.
Navigating and talking about bureaucracy and governmental process was an easy enough task even if he had little formal training in it.
Much like yesterday Masaru felt he did enough to not be an embarrassment but wasn't quite delivering what the judges were looking for.
