After a long day of getting acquainted with her fellow competitors and getting through some minor panic attacks, Kaori decided to settle down for hte night in her...room? Bunk? She was only told her lodgings would be in the academy itself, as befitting those aligned with the Imperial families.

Whatever that means.

She started walking through the academy in a dignified manner, trying to find her lodgings.

Equally adrift, Kasumi, lately of the kobune Yukikaze, likewise wandered. She'd changed out of her feast finery, but was still more dressed up than she was at all used to, and completely and utterly unsure what to do with herself now that she didn't have watches to stand or duties to the ship.

So she regarded the red-headed stranger as just one more oddity in what promised to be a stay full of them.

"Er... evening, samurai-san."

"Ah, evening to you too, samurai-san." She replied uncertainly, trying to gauge a clan or anything from her mons.

"Out enjoying the night?" Like jigoku she was going to be honest and say she had no idea where she was.

"Not used t'being at loose ends, so kinda restless"

She bowed.

"Yukikaze no Kasumi, of the Mantis Clan."

Kasumi cocked her head to the side.

"Not sure I know that one. Some Imperial vassal family?"

Kaori wanted to bluster and stuff.

But she didn't.

"No, ronin family, in service to Miya Tetsu-sama, governor of the City of Rich Frog." She frowned. "Don't think I've heard of the Yukikaze family either.."

Kasumi laughed, plainly amused.

"Yukikaze's not m'family, it's my ship! The Mantis haven't got a family name- we take our names from the ships we serve on or the ports we work at. So we've got a ronin family, and a clan without a family name. I think we oddballs might need t'stick together."

"Ah, I see." She suddenly recalled. "So Funegao-san serves on the ship then. I think." She frowned. "Do you prefer Kasumi-sama then, or...Yukikaze-sama?"

Feeling slightly uncomfortable at having an actual family name compared to an actual Minor Clan person, Kaori decided on something.

"Please, feel free to call me by my given name Kasumi-san."

Hey, that's not awkward at all!

"Are you also staying at the Academy lodgings?"

"Hm? Oh, nah, Kaori-san. We're being put up at the House of the Laughing Carp- I'm just having a bit of a meander. Been a hell of a day, hasn't it?"

"Certainly. Not what I was expecting, I guess. But then, I am unsure what I was expecting." She let out a small smile. "Hopefully we'll both have a strong showing at the Tournament, Kasumi-san."

"Don't think they invited anyone who can' manage at least a couple of the jobs they have lined up credibly. Think I might find the iaijutsu a bit tricky- not a lot of katanas get swung around on a kobune, y'know."

"I can see that. Though I mostly see riverboats in our city, but even those are tricky enough to navigate. I assume if it comes to combat, it's mostly archery on ships?" She asked turning her head in curiosity, trying to think of scenarios. "Or do you guys...jump over? How does that work?"

"Arrows as y'close, and I think a good company of archers could keep a deck swept, but folks c'n always go below, an' arrows can run low, an' sometimes the winds ain't agreeable. No, if y'mean t'take a ship, y'gotta board it. Usually ya throw grapnels to draw the ships close- know a guy who likes t'swing across the open space an' jump, but he's a right show-off. No, y'generally close to grapple an' then hop a much shorter distance. An' then it gets real messy."
