Nanako made a brave face despite her internal pessimism. Something bad was going to happen: surely she'd pull a muscle despite stretching or there would be an embarrassing clothing failure or a rock would fall from the sky and crush things.
After all, it had happened to her before. Nyaneko looked quizzically at its owner before becoming bored with the at-times neurotic Crane maiden and busying themselves with the important task of grooming.
Settling into a stable stance, Nanako did a good job hefting up the heavy ball. Any exertion it caused her she bore with the quiet, steady aplomb and dignity of a daughter of Doji.
Shifting her body weight, she flowed around the lifted weight, cleverly utilizing body mechanics rather than raw strength to artfully maneuver the load.
Lastly, it was all going so well that Nanako thought she may even make it past this first event without incident. Gracefully manipulating the ball towards the hoop, Doji Nanako was rewarded by watching the ball arc towards the target...and then unceremoniously plop to the ground short of it. Almost, but not quite there.
Biting her lower lip, Nanako bowed to the judges and, scooping up Nyaneko, left yet another place of her public shaming.
